4-speed Hydramatic, with Reverse at the bottom of the quadrant. Like a pushbutton Torqueflite, these could be push-started in Low range. I put one of these transmissions in my 1959 389 TriPower Catalina, almost 60 years ago! The Pontiac originally had a 3-speed manual in it, but I could not keep clutches in it. It was really great after the transmission swap. I was still in high school.

My 55 buick had "PNDLR"- 2 speed variable pitch stator trans.
 
Those Bonnevilles were quite something back then. Not only did they have more power (310 hp) than the Chevy fuelies of that year, but they were costly too at $5,800 to get one when new. That year, if you bought a Bonneville, it was like this - they were all convertibles and they all had fuel injection.
 
In 1958, the Bonneville came as a hardtop, too. '58 GM's were huge Barges. They put chrome on with trowels!
