An early Porsche.

No.

The car was built in 1937 as the Volkswagen W30 – still at the former Porsche engineering office and with support from Mercedes. After the three so-called V models, which no longer exist, it was the first prototype series for what would later become the VW Beetle.

Well... you certainly know more about old VWs and Porsches - and probably most everything else - than I, but might I suggest that this is a matter of semantics? I mean both the VW and the Porsche were designed by the same man and his engineering staff, and both were produced under their direction and both shared, arguably, the same DNA... of course, a solid argument might be made that they are actually descended from Hans Ledwinka and should be called Tatras, but we won't get into that right now... ;)

OK, all smart aleck-ness aside, some of those early ones ARE awfully similar... I of course have always maintained that Porsches are just nuclear powered Volkswagens. Even had NUCLR VW as a personalised plate for my 911SC eons ago. Porsche folks didnt seem to appreciate that.
WHICH...reminds me of a story.
Late 70s/early 80s there were a lot of Porsches in the parking lot at the research lab for Amoco where my dad worked. One of the 911 owners got tired of the VW comments and got a personalised plate that said "NOT A VW". A fellow who drove a SuperBeetle convertible saw that as an opportunity and got a plate that said "NOT A 911." The Porkchop owner was not amused and the VW pilot went out of his way to park next to the blue 911 every day when possible. :) have a polaroid of those here somewhere...
