I don't think 1931 is the correct date.
1831 maybe.
There was a skyscraper boom going on there in the 1920's.

I'm a native NYer and the date is correct. If you follow the street up on the left side of Central Park, that's 5th ave, and look very carefully you can see the Empire State Building. It was finished in 1931. Construction began in 1930.
