Can the old fluid be removed ? Or is it grease ? If grease, doesn't it get hard after 45 years ?

if it works leave it alone, some people put in gear lube and then it leaks out of lower seal. if it an't broke dont' fix it.

The manual boxes have a high temp high pressure grease that is not a fluid. If you search the toppic you will find a good thread that a few guys talked about what grease they used.
