Help me understand the difference in 8 3/4 carriers. 741, 742 and 489. What's the difference? I have a 742 in my Charger. And?

741 small block low performance, small yoke and bearings. 742 and 489 high performance and larger bearings. Larger yokes on BB not sure about yoke size on SB.

If original, 741s and 742s will have a clutch type Sure-Grip, 489s will have a cone type Sure-Grip. The clutch types are rebuildable, and in my opinion a much better unit.

Well I have everything I'm supposed to find on the rear end. 742 casting, big "2" at the top, it's not a sure grip, one wheels turn one way the other the opposite (darn!!!) and I do have a small tag at the top right front side under a bolt head. Too much dirt and grease to read it. I also have a snubber. I was hoping some prior owner had stuck a sure grip in for me but .....no such luck! Just like the fender tag said.

The cone units are not exactly bad but once they quit pulling both wheels, they need to be pulled out and fixed. Most keep on hammering on them like they do like all the other types of LSD's and all that does it make them turn into junk. Yeah, you can't buy new parts for them unless you find someone that has some NOS stuff on Ebay etc but they can be fixed if they are not completely totaled. Been doing it for 30+ years.....
