Rear window seal 67-coronet

OK so I have a 67cORONET I took the back window out to install a vinyl top. After I took the back window out, and the gasket on the pinch wield there is a foam gasket.
Has anybody seen this before? Do I need to replace it? Is it used just as a filler or is it used as part of the moisture barrier?

I recently pulled a the back window on my 66 Coronet and saw the same foam gasket. I scraped it all off since i'm getting started on body work. I'ld like to know if it needs replaced as well.
