I have a 68 roadrunner. The engine bay needs to be repainted. Can someone tell me how much I should pay for a pro to repaint the right way (motor out)? Paint is white but will need to be matched.

I dont think there is any metal work although there are cracks along the strut towers. Metal is good. Just think it didnt bond well when it was painted 10 years ago.

pull the motor and gut the engine bay.
if the hood has v21 your all set.if the paint matches close you can sneak by.
if not you may want to blend it into the tops of the fenders.
it will not match.

you mention the last repaint may not be bonded well to the original........ repainting over that wont do much good....... your engine bay may require some extensive cleaning and prep work

And how much does this cost? I don't do paint or prep. Would rather pay someone to take this on

Its hard to say.. There are many issues that can arise. Most pro's I know may give a rough estimate but will go in stages. Likethey may want to pull the engine first and you would go by that charge until it was inspected then on to the next step. Its impossible to guess what price you'll get without seeing detail of this engine bay .You'll have to go get estimates from several places

when doing a restoration, the engine bay would be power washed and media blasted along with the rest of the body and every thing would already be disassembled and out of the way..... that pretty much takes care of alot of the prep. much less involved than working on a "together" car......... there is usually pitted areas to be addressed especially around the battery area......

on a painted/together car, the prep is much more involved as not to make a mess where it is not intended, in addition, you gotta deal with the K frame, steering box, ect.; and where to stop? prep and paint these also? underside of the frame rails are dirty, crusty, and not easy to access......... im thinking anywhere from 1200 to 2500 or more depending on what is there and how far you go, that would be with motor already out...... beware, it can turn into a can of worms. this is how full blown restorations start

Having done a few of these jobs myself I can tell you it's a fair amount of work to prep and paint it. If you are dealing with layers of old paint save yourself some trouble and rent a water blaster (pressure washer with sand attachment) or a hand held bead blaster from Eastwood. Face shield and coveralls on; a few bags of playground sand from the hardware store then go to town. Naturally, you will want to completely gut the bay and seal up every hole. The area surrounding this job will look like a beach when you're done and you will have sand in places you didn't expect but I think the clean up is still easier than hand sanding all the nooks and crannies.

Once stripped, detailed and loose sand removed, use an etching primer (HOK direct to metal primer is great) then top coat. If your painter does this right, at minimum it will look like a factory job, or likely better.

Here's the last one I did.

Regarding price to do the job I suppose add up the labor rate for a full days worth of work. The paint alone takes a fair amount of time to get all the contours of the engine bay covered. It's more time consuming than you think if you want a good job.
