I just pulled the vinyl top off my 70 Charger and like most, it looks like a roof skin is needed. I have never owned a car that needed this amount of rust repair and am clueless to what would be a fair price from a shop. AMD sells the skin for $700. I would pull the trim and leave it up to the shop to pull the glass, cut out and replace the roof and re-install the glass. Has anyone had this repair recently could tell me what a fair price would be to have this done? I am in California if that helps.

Thanks!

do you have the inside takin apart? does amd sell everything or just a skin? after glass is pulled and interior for the most part removed.. cutting and drilling the skin off is not a big task,, and putting a new on on.. but it is the inner structure that could be costly.. drip rails and inner supports.. that will be a different story..

Yes, entire interior is out and I haven't removed the headliner. What is pictured in the photo is the worst. AMD sells just the skin.

Are you going to put a vinyl top back on? That is a key decision, because if you are going back to vinyl, then the skin does not have to be perfect after it replaced. If you are going to change over to no vinyl, then it all depends on if you want someone to do it all for you and how good their rep is for quality work. I don't know the going rate in Cali, but I am betting its not cheap for a good fabricator/welder per hour. Take a look at how many spot welds need to be removed or cut and then multiply up the time to do it. Then double that for the install. This would just be the swap, no bodywork, paint etc.

My guess would be a MINIMUM of two man-days plus wearable parts (bits, weld gas, etc). Somewhere in the couple grand range.

Thanks for the reply, I was planning on putting a vinyl top back on the car. I have gotten a few quotes in the 6000-8000 range. I have seen a few members do the work themselves and in the past I have done a floor pan replacement. A floor isn't a roof but think I am going to take my time and do it myself. I have a hard time paying anyone 6000 to do a roof skin with no paint or body work especially when I am pulling the glass out prior to anyone touching the car.

YIKES, 6 to 8 K for a roof panel replacement, that hurts me thinking about it. I bought the parts and paid 1 k for a quarter panel patch and roof panel replacement in labor cost.....but I am on the 'other" coast....dang...you could mess up several new roof panels in attempting yourself and still have cash in the bank...the way I see it...

Bandit67, Gran, exactly. If I screw up at least I'm only losing out on parts, and spot weld bits.

Changing the roof skin is pretty straightforward but if there is rust in the roof structure, that's where it can get complicated. If you have repairs to be done on the structure you may have to take the roof skin off and on several times to insure that it fits properly over the repaired areas of the inner structure.
