I am just curious. When they built the light weight cars, why did they go with carpet instead of rubber floor covering? Was carpet actually lighter than rubber? I was just wondering as the base 'stripper' models were used as a base for building the lightweights but I thought the base models came with rubber flooring instead of carpet.

Carpet got cheaper to produce than rubber and feels better under foot. Lighter maybe?

Chrysler could charge more for carpet, as it was an upgrade that usually came with other things. The choice had Nothing to do with weight.

sorry about that, I should have read closer.

They pulled the jute off the back of the carpet in the 67 WO/RO cars.

Carpet is lighter per square foot than rubber.
