Started working on the GTX. Pulled out a mess of carpet and LVP flooring that the PO had in the trunk to subs and amp elevated. He had the trunk replaced already but then didn’t do anything prevent water entry and rust. Do you guys think this is saveable?

You can try pouring Evaporust on it. If it drips through, that would be a bad sign.
 
All you can do is sand and see. POR-15 if not to bad. JMO
 
POR 15 is a band aid.
It works as intended for halting rust from growing but cannot make up for a panel that is too thin to retain structural value.
 
Pix can be very deceiving. Id certainly try cleaning it up and see what you have before getting crazy and cutting it out.
 
Of course, I feel the same way. Either Evaporust, CLR or some type of rust abatement chemical will eat the corrosion and leave behind what is still good.
I patched the trunk floor in Jigsaw by using an AMD panel and only replacing the metal between the frame rails.

It can look worse than it is from here. Evaporust and it will clean up. Then see how bad it is.

If you want to clean it up and then apply a product like Rust Bullet, it will fill in a lot of those pits.

Plan is to it fix/restore to as close to factory as possible. It will live in my garage while work on it.
 
Clean the rust off first, don't use anything that will cover or coat the surface first thing. That won't get you to a factory stock restoration.
 
Sounds promising. Wire wheel, vacuum, degrease and apply Rust Bullet, POR-15, DOM16 (Canadian version of POR-15 that is less pricey up north), Corroseal or Evaporust.

No, man. You're missing the point.
The "Paint over rust" stuff is not a F I X, it is a cover up. It does nothing to eliminate rust.
 
POR-15, DOM16, Rust Bullet aren't just paint. They're rust converters. So is Evaporust, which you also recommended a few posts ago. Not everyone can afford new sheetmetal for every part with a rusty surface. If it's strong enough to stop a screwdriver jab, then it'll be good enough for a cleanup and rust converter, unless you're doing a rotisserie chicken.
 
Evaporust is not a converter, it eliminates it. CLR eliminates it.
The other crap just covers it like pancake batter make up on a Waffle House waitress.

I have used what I mentioned. I'm not just a dude that blabs about stuff with no experience with it.
 
I agree with KD. POR and Silver Bullet do not do any rust converting. They only cover it up for some other poor soul to find later. I went down that road many years ago. Best to do at the minimum, get some phosphoric acid soaking on the rust, neutralize it, and epoxy prime. Or, the best would be to replace any rusty with new metal.
 
If you are restoring this car then don't use any of that POR 15 junk, or similar stuff.

Evaporust removes rust and leaves the bare metal. There will be goo left behind that will need cleaned up. Clean it up immediately, don't wait or you will need to start over again.
