Has anyone replaced seat springs on '70 style bucket seats? Can you find replacements? Buy a roll of seat spring and bend it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
First photo shows someone's attempt to repair these springs. The rest of the photos show some of the tools used to make replacement parts and how they are repaired. I do not normally paint the springs but I painted these red so they can be seen in the photos.
Replacement spring sets are available. They are not cheap and I have never installed any that actually fit the seat it was purchased for without modifying them first. Then after being unhappy with the replacement units I just started making my own or repairing the original ones when possible.I bought tools and materials to do the work and so far have not found any that I couldn't duplicate. Hope this helps.
The steel rod is called edge wire in my area. It comes in 8 foot pieces and is used in many places on the average set of springs. We drive 85 miles one way to get it as shipping costs a lot more than the spring wire so we buy a bunch at a time. Also the zig-zag springs are of two thicknesses, the heavier one is used in the cushions and the lighter ones in the backrests. I have seen many times where the thin ones are used in both places.
