That must be a crapload of water.

Those escalators usually have a 4' deep crawl space under them for the "other side" of the tread and to facilitate maintenance. I was facinated by this kind of equipment as a child, and hung around to look any time I saw them being serviced. Same with elevators.
The space is usually larger than the escalator is wide, and is also usually at least a partial "sub-floor" of the building.
