In the garage. Under the hood. Again.
Further adventures of the Polish Cave-Man in an old garage somewhere in Michigan...

As you may remember from Episode One,I utilized non-automotive tools to extract a bum rear axle assembly from a car. On today's episode,I'll install the center section-using those same non-automotive devices.

First,the tool inventory:

Two choices of lifting devices, wooden ramps and a virtually useless creeper(no room under the car). I chose the tried and true small jack;in 35 years of service,it has never failed me!

Now,balancing the pig on the snowmobile dolly which was on the jack cup was rather tricky, especially since I had to move the whole thing under the springs and such:

Not a lot of clearance,Clarence! OK;one major hurdle overcome. I didn't drop the case on the floor:black_eye:(I asked for the spirit of Walter P. to guide me),and now the real fun: lifting it into place. Took my time, and the dolly actually helped. I raised the pig just slightly higher than the studs, and s-l-o-w-l-y pushed on the jack(remember, the wheels under the cup don't pivot-I had to slide them across the floor laterally),and the pig slide down the dolly and over the studs.

Ta-Da!!! Success! No broken bones,no broken parts, and a minimum of bad language. Another "The car likes me!" moment. Further proof that a Cro-Magnon with one eyebrow...

...can wrench once in a while. Excuse me;I have to go chase and club tonight's dinner...:tongueflap:

I always Muscled these things in for the last 30 years like a Real Man, instead of using the jack like a Cave Man. :rolling:

Seriously. great Idea.

Hey you shaved your eyebrows.... :tongueflap:

Great job

Nah,just trimmed them;I was scaring small children, old ladies and Corvette owners. Can't have that:no:.

So who's where on the evolutionary chart?:grin::grin: If I were even 10 years younger,I might have tried that. I HATE working under any car, thanks to an incident when I was 16 and a '68 Chevelle tried to kill me(long story and partly my fault);the S.F is up on eight jackstands(the front wheels/tires are on it,though) and I can't effin' wait to get it back on four wheels again.

So you guys are tellin me you never laid on a creeper, had your friends set a transmission on your chest, roll under the car, bench-press it into place, and have them spin the bolts on?!!! What kinda Sallies are they raising these days?

Actually,on my '68 Z/28,I did exactly that with an M-22 Muncie. Of course,I was a much younger stud. Old age and some semblance of wisdom dictates that other methods be employed. Plus,my girlfriend's 17 year-old son wasn't around so I could get him to do it.

Well... yeah... a manual....ya pussy! No bellhousing! Wouldnt have needed the friends then either. I put the bolts in with my SPARE hand!:rolling: all in good fun Al! And dont get me started on how useful step-kids can be! Cause they are always in the middle of a "quest" in word of "War-crack"!!!

A Muncie? My lil sister could press a Muncie. Back in the day I did that on my T5 runner on a couple of occasions.......except for the part about the friends helping. I'd shove the trans under the car (front wheels on ramps, rear on stands) then slide under, roll the trans up on to my chest, then press it up into position.

and I only weighed 140 at the time

Hell, I thought that was perfectly acceptable and I'm only 1/8 Polish :tongueflap: I recently pulled a dash pad out of a 71 F250 with a Swiss Army knife. Now if my knife had the floor jack attachment I'd go for the tranny

I refer to Muncies as a gear bags rather than a gear boxes :rolling:

Man;this is a tough crowd!

OK,it was a cast-iron case Muncie with an iron bellhousing and iron gears, and it weighed 1200 lbs and I actually broke a sweat doing it. There;are you happy?:tongueflap::tongueflap::tongueflap:

When the vehicle is on a hoist,it's one thing;when it's just rolled up on ramps or(God forbid) on jackstands,it's a wee bit different.

Hey,I CAN pick up a big-block 727 out of my pickup bed and carry it into my garage. And,I'm a beaten-up,broken-down 54 year fart. So there!:tongueflap:

well i remember when......:rolling::rolling::rolling:
