Is there supposed to be something between the weatherstrip channels and the car body?
And once the weatherstrip channels are installed, do i need to use weatherstrip adhesive for the actual weatherstrip?

It may depend on the year but 66/67 cars do have a thin gasket material there. Wish I could tell you what it’s made of but I can’t. I think I’ve seen it for sale.

Again on the weatherstripping, the year car may matter. On 66/67 cars the weatherstripping is either pressed into channel piece, or retained by plastic push clips. But the ends at the front vent window frame area need adhesive to anchor them.

So this foam like seal is definitely necessary then?
(am WELL aware if “ take it all apart” theory)…:(
for shopping purposes, what is its proper name?

Just call up DMT and tell them what you're doing, they'll know what you're talking about. Don't waste your time with YearOne or Classic.

While i have a few of you’s attention… when its time to install the actual weatherstrip, does it just push into the rail, or is weatherstrip adhesive needed?

Yes, it just pushes in. Lubing it up a little (silicon spray or paste) and a popcycle stick to push it into the channel work well. No adhesive is used on the rail part as it locks into it very well. The stuff from Classic is DMT. I glanced at DMTs website as I thought they were the makers but didn’t initially see it and Classic came up on Google. I try to buy from DMT when they have what I’m looking for. I believe the forward end anchors with some weatherstrip adhesive like black 3M.
