What would cause my starter to bind up?

When I turn the key it cranks really hard like the timing is off but, it isn’t and when it’s hot it’s even worse

it’s an aftermarket high torque starter (no idea what brand because I can’t find any markings)

Fresh rebuild only thing left is the original block.

when the starter was on the old build it would hard crank when it was hot

Fresh build = tight engine in most cases.
That and a older starter will show up or cables ect like mentioned above.

Hit it with a timing light when you crank it to be sure. I had a really weird one with the Vac advance advancing while cranking, drove me nuts and yes it was on ported vacuum. Actually broke two starter noses off before I found it.
