hey guys i just replaced my steering gear box without any problems but the mounting bracket that holds the shaft which is directly infront is stripped, the last owner welded it on there. whats this parts name and where can i find one??

If the splines are stripped on the coupler I think you'd have to find a new one at a junkyard. I don't know where you could get a new one. I do believe the coupler bodies are the same from '66-'76

well get this, this coupler and im guessing that what it is has two bolt holes and connects to the back of the steering gear box with the shaft behind the coupler. now i went to my parts car but its a 74 roadrunner didn't have this type of coupler. im confused..

im researching this part but can't find it any where. not even a pic on the net.

the 73-74 uses a "rag joint...on 73, its steering coloumn, coupler, ragjoint and then steering box, on 74 they changed it to steering column, ragjoint ,coupler, and steering box...they flipped them around in 74 due to heat damage from the exhaust manifold what you need is a steering box coupler for ragjoint for 73 only you already have that pic up above its just at the column...

this pic is of a 74, that rubber disc bolts to your black pies, ang couples the upper shaft..remember 73 is reverse of this..

ya its stripped out, i guess that's why the last owner welded it on..it way dangerous with all the play it had. so am i gonna have to search the junk yards for the piece i need? thanks boss for replying.

You can search the junk yards but its a 1 year only design... or you can change over to the 74 style if you have a 74 parts car, you can swap the shaft in the column or install the 74 column all the way to the steering box itwill bolt right in as a complete assembly...and the 74 style is actualy better.

thanks boss vega, i will take your advice and swap out with the shaft from my 74..

well i got off the shaft off the 74..it was a little tough and had to use a pitman arm but i managed to get it off. one thing, its missing it's pin that goes through the coupler. anything i can use?

if your talking about the split pin that locks the coupler in the groove, you can get them at any napa and in most hardware stores.what was the condition of the lower rubber piece that was on your 73 set up? was it destroyed?...just wondering because im looking for an intact one to make aluminum replacements.

Man, the 74 shaft isn't gonna work. It's different where it hooks up to the colunm..

you have to use the whole column assembly, or atleast swap the shafts inside the column which is pretty easy...the 2 years are different from the steering wheel to the box, but if you have the 74 its totaly doable .
