Good Day all,

I had an issue 2 summers ago with the "chatter" in the rear diff during turns. Pretty loud. Both directions. Ordered the clutch plates and had them replaced. Voila all was fixed and great until recently and it is doing the same thing now....noise when turning both ways. Only after the diff heats up after a few miles. If I go around in a circles for a few laps it seems to disappear for the remainder of the ride. Maybe 1500 miles since the first time. Friction modifier was used. Then ran on stands as per the FSM. The diff is original 3.23 date stamped for 68. Original suregrip.

Has the clutches worn again?

I have drained the fluid and changed with new and different friction modifier. No change. I also added more than I should of...just to see. No change.

Any help appreciated.

I know what ou mean. Just replaced mine with 3:55 Eaton TruTrac. So far so good.

Had a 64 Olds it would feel like you went over a curb. Annoying but didn't break. Ford friction modifier seems to be the one most guy recommend.

If you've already doubled up on the Ford stuff drive the car to a parking lot & turn the steering to full lock, make three circles, turn the steering to the other full lock make three circles... Take the car home & park it... Try driving it again tomorrow... Tight corners force the lube into the plates... I've cured quite a few axles with that procedure...

1 Wild RT…thanks for that. You are at least providing me some hope!! Will try that.

I don’t mind doing the clutches again…but don’t want to end up with the same result.

The car has not even remotely been driven hard either.

I bought a 323 489 case sure-grip from your neck of the woods, i had the same issue as said.i added 2 bottles of ford friction modifier, maybe 2/1/2 lol, i made lots of noise but did go away 1wildrt is right, also i loosen the right side adjuster just a tad once the noise was gone readjusted too specs.don't know if that help, was grabbing straws at that point good luck bro.

This leads me to ask
Do you guys normally add 2 bottles?

reason I ask is I have a rebuilt rearend in my Charger with zero miles on it
new gears and bearings but we used my old sure-grip
Was planning on filling it tonight
I have Lucas 80w90 Gear Oil and Mopar limited slip additive
I bought an extra bottle of the sure-grip additive
Should I put both of them in there?
Should I wait and buy the Ford additive?

I have researched and read the hell out of this. Everyone seems to say use the ford. Dr Diff site says use the ford too I think.

Back in the 60's & 70's the stuff that worked was whale oil... At some point hunting whales became a problem, today whale oil is only available in Japan... So we have synthetic lube... It doesn't work as well & allot of it is garbage.. The Ford stuff has been the most effective consistently since the 80's.. Other brands may or may not work I don't bother looking for another brand since I know as many others know the Ford stuff works...

BTW When you start doing the turns the clutches may sound like metal to metal brakes... Really ugly noises... I tore an axle down because of the noise... Found nothing wrong.... Just plug your ears, do the circles both directions & park the car...

I will do that

I like tight figure eights to get modifier in the clutches
