I pulled the pan to fix a dent and replace the leaky molded windage tray and it looked dirty but okay otherwise.
With the pan off, I turned it upside down and drained the rest. The oil had a real faint silver shimmer to it. The magnetic drain plug had about half a corn kernel of goo stuck to it. The bottom of the pan had no metallic paste like I have seen other times when a cam or bearings have gone bad.
The engine is a 440 based 493. I last had it out in 2011 to refresh it with a cylinder deglaze, new rings and bearings in standard size. The cam is a MP 528 solid with Howards EDM direct oiling lifters. I use 10w30 oil with the Comp Cams break in supplement.
I pulled the #3 and #4 main bearing caps. Both look excellent. There was some slight wear but perfectly fine otherwise. # 8 rod bearing looked fine too. All the rods feel tight but do have some side to side movement as they always have. The oil pressure has always been excellent. 75-80 psi cold and rarely ever getting below 25 even at hot idle in 100+ degree days.
I looked up to the underside of the cam and lifters and didn't see anything unusual.
I pulled the intake to get a look. Again, everything looked fine.
