Very likely I will be building one soon. Have a couple of questions:
- does the front carb have idle mixture screws
- do the carbs operate on a 1:1 basis.
Thanks.

Yes mixture screws. Dont know about the ratio.
Stroker kit is best to make those giant intake ports work below like 3500 rpm.
Especially if your not runing 4.1-4.3 rear gears.

Some later year carbs have plugs over the idle mixture screw ports (not adjustable) on the front carb for emissions. Not sure when this started - maybe 68 with the 4430S.

The factory linkage is progressive. The front carb does not start to open until something like 30% (a guess - I don’t remember exactly) and then it catches up to the rear carb so that both are fully open at full linkage travel.

Yes: There are plugs over the front mixture screws (easy to remove). Progressive carb linage that works very well and both reach WOT at the same time. I also second that a stroker crank is a very nice addition. It tends to bring the power band down a few hundred RPM which makes them work even better on the street. Aluminum heads are a great addition too and take weight off the front and help the car handle a little better. I've owned 426 Hemi's since 1980 and my last few have all had Stage V heads and stroker cranks which just makes the cars more pleasant along with a good ignition system.
The issues that made the street Hemi less pleasant on the street were not hitting the torque curve until 3500, nose heavy, spark plugs fouling early and intake ports leaking oil either through the gaskets or the studs that go into the intake ports not being sealed.

Carbs depend on what you throw on top. My '66 originals are in a box. Engine has Eddies on it and all 8 barrels get pulled in at the same time.

Did you notice a drop in gas mileage? Had a crossram on my car and on trip didn't notice a drop 13/14 mpg. Screwing around town a different story.

LOL Fran, gas mileage! IF I behave it gets about 150 miles out of a tank.
Yes if you own a Hemi you don't/shouldn't worry about mpg. I was thinking of a cruise of 200 miles. Drove from Connecticut to Syracuse Ny with the crossram, and kept track of mpg. Was curious about mpg did the 13/14 then.

I’m pretty sure from seat of the pants feel that my stock 67 440 GTX with 3.55 and slightly looser torque converter will smoke my stock 66 Hemi, 4-speed off the line up to some point. But the Hemi pulls harder and harder the more it winds out.

I've also done the "all 8 Barrels in" in my Coronet a number of times..... (when I was much younger) , and each was an insane experience.... thrilling, and more than I care to explore now, at my advanced age!
