The story of the A-10 and why the F-35 cannot replace it.

Awesome asset. Thanks Paladin6! am setting on the patio drinking a beer and watching the vid. 2 A10's (out of Grissom I'd guess) flew over the south side of the property!! They were heading north east; probably to Fort Wayne. There's a group stationed there. It's not uncommon to see them run in the area.

AND HERE COME TWO MORE!!!! LOW AND FAST!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!! Gives ya goose bumps.

Well, it looks like at least some of the planes have already had their new wings attached:

Sadly, that effort ran into the same problem the Brits had. The one billion dollar estimate jumped to over two billion fast as they discovered there is no way to mass produce wing sets, and from what I've heard the original plan to re-wing most of the fleet has been reduced to an as-needed program. If wing damage is identified and there is a definable need for the aircraft, it gets rewinged. If not, if goes to Arizona.

The Fairchild Republic A10 Thunderbolt For Its Age Is Still The Baddest Plane On The Planet For Close In Air Support! Just Ask The Iraqi Republic Guard! They Shot The **** Out Of That Convoy Coming Back Out Of Kuwait In The 1990's!! Tanks Burning Everywhere, Burned Up Iraqi Bodies, Everyting Wrecked! Nasty, Nasty Boy!

I gotta believe the A-10 and Apache are the most used aircraft in our military. An updated A-10/new production, would make sense to me.

That could happen. The A-10 was developed for a single purpose, which was we needed an aircraft capable of engaging and killing swarms of Soviet tanks. We were expecting to have to engage Soviet armored forces in brigade and maybe even divisional strengths in the early stages of WWIII, and we needed a plane that could kill dozens of tanks during a mission rather than one or two. The end of the Cold War lessened that threat, and while our forces have been engaged with enemy armored forces in recent conflicts, it hasn't been in any number that other forces couldn't easily handle.

But, now that we have a resurgent Russia that looks to be falling back on their old best practices, there's a good chance we could see a demand for a new tank killer aircraft coming along.

the A-10 is a beast and aside from WW2 planes has always been my personal fav ....the sound of the gun is awesome

I personally love them all, obviously a little bias toward F-16s. But after watching a couple live feeds of an AC-130 Gunship dealing some damage to ISIS a couple weeks ago I might have just found my new fave.

I'm hearing rumblings that the S-3B Vikings might be getting reactivated too.

Aw, come on....
The F-35 would shoot down the A-10 before the A-10 even knew the F-35 was out there....

The F-35s role is not the same as the A-10.

Come on paladin06
The A-10 is a Legacy aircraft...
Released into service in March 1977

Used for Close Air Support....
Designed as a low altitude gun platform.

Do you honestly believe the F-16 can shoot down an A-10?
Of course it can.
Did you know the F-16 Aircraft BLOCK 60 (Legacy aircraft) is one of the most accurate bombing platforms ever?

Did you know the F-35 is "Exponentially" more advanced than the F-16?

Its not a fair comparison, period.

I have to look for pictures...but we were at Selfridge ANG base a few years ago, and the airframe mechanics were working on an A10 that hit a hawk in flight. Tore up the nose, and took out the right engine[ingested bird]. I was amazed at the damage.

Hey 65 you're dating yourself. The new name for them is now "SPECTER". Most are on the C-130 H and J platform now. Just an awesome weapons platform for stand off eradication...cr8crshr/Tuck
