what thread sealant r u guys using to seal the factory exhaust bolts that go into the water jackets? i have been using ARP thread sealant but,,today upon finally starting my car..1 bolt so far weeps water..440 block with #286 max heads and hedman headers....fortuneatly it was 1 that was easy to get to,,resealed with massive quantitiy of ARP sealer...now drying in the garage..thanks...always looking for the better idea.until my TF 270's go on.

Going back 40 years I used Permatex non hardening... think I still have the same tube in the tool box...

Interesting,@stage3. I'm betting it was either the very front, or very last hole.
We've talked about this before and it's possible for any of them to be drilled into the water jacket. I used to think only the front or rear until I had a second one back leak once. Futher discussion on this proved it could be any of them so use sealer on all of them. It makes them come out easier if you have to remove them in the future if they aren't bare metal to metal.

The reason I'm curious, i have two sets of 286 max heads, and in all four heads, only the very end holes go into the water jacket. And yes, i remember the previous discussion, i was the op.
I did have to seal all the holes on my 906s.

I never had any luck using that ARP thread sealant. Used it on two engines both leaked.
Just use RTV now.

thats good to know where as i did not look at all of them.....it was the back hole passenger side that started weeping...but i did use sealer on them all.easy to get too...

It's all of them on my '915's

Guys look at how vastly different max wedge heads are than any other Regular production heads with a heat crossover that come on grandads 4 door. They have little in common with 906 915 526 203 452 etc which have ALL the exhaust studs to water.

I don’t know what max wedge heads have, but you guys say the ends only. I don’t know, I bought into the upgraded hemispherical 426.

I find it gets brittle, maybe from the "shellac". It's ok for gaskets that are not subjected to extreme heat. Useing it on valve cover gaskets, you'll see after time, on the lower half of the gasket the sealant will be brittle from the heat compared to the upper half. Not saying it wouldn't work, I just like the Permatex #2 for the flexable properties.

White Teflon paste seals mine. Never leaks. I use it on the intake bolts as well to keep oil from weeping up.

I had some issues with leaks in some old 452's I was running. Replaced the sealant with teflon tape. Still leaked. Found out later that the freeze plug had corroded. Replaced them all with brass and put studs in the heads and no problems. I think my issue with the freeze plug was due to running tap water in the block for coolant. Since then I only use distilled water in the race car, and anti-freeze with distilled water mix in the streeter. Good luck.
