Up in Telkeenta Alaska right now. Went on a raft ride & we are scheduled to take a plane ride on to a glacier tomorrow. Here's a picture from yesterday....
It may not look it, but the lead edge of that glacier is about 200-250' tall.

The level part of the glacier that is level with the top of the ship's bridge is at least 1,000 feet above sea level....and there's more hidden in the clouds!
The pictures I have don't do justice to what you see through your eyes. It's really awe inspiring.

For a perspective, look at the spruce trees on the shore line. They are about 100 feet tall.

During the day....around mid 50s along the coast. Just checked into our hotel which is about 100 miles from Denali & I'd day upper 50s.
Check this out which is at the edge (and I mean right on the edge) of the small town we were in....
The scenery in Alaska is huge and because of the size of the mountains, while on board the ship it's really hard to judge distance to shore because you don't have any reference points for comparison. 100 + foot trees are only 3/16" tall and add to that, the size and height of the mountains and one's perspective is way off. While driving back to the hotel in the bus, we were on a 1 1/2 mile straight away and judging by the height of the trees in the distance, I'd say that the ship was 2-3 miles away from shore, but it really didn't seem that far. These mountains are at least 4,000 feet tall.
Once again, those trees down near the shore are at least 100 feet tall. The gray in the water is mountain silt that is trapped in the glacial ice flow and washed onto the ocean.

RC, just think of the irrepuable damage you've contributed to that glacier from your cruise ship smogging up that fjord.

I've done two cruises in Alaska and would go back again, it really is beautiful and pictures never do it justice, as with all the great natural wonders you really need to see them with your own eyes.
