Time to buy electronic voltage limiter

It's a 12 volt DC.to 5 volt converter. 12 volts in 5 volts out simplicity in itself......plus it's relatively inexpensive.....?????.....however it offers no protection like the RTEngineering's unit...the choice is yours.....

I bought something similar. Amazon.com: SIGANDG 12V to 5V DC Converter Car Power Voltage, Step Down to DC 5V 3A 15W Waterproof Buck Converter, Supply Step-Down Module Compatible with Vehicle Car Truck Volt : Electronics. Im going to try it on my 67 Charger. I'm just wondering if I really need to take out the old one in the fuel gauge, can I leave it in and just not have any power to it.
