"Officially" (factory specs) it's initial of 5BTDC, vacuum advance disconnected and plugged of course.

Dual point distributor - Each set of points 27-32°, total Dwell both sets 37-42°.

factory Prestolite distributor initial timing would be TDC for manual trans, 5 BTDC for automatic. if your using stock/original parts by no means do anything even close to 16 BTDC; 10 BTDC is too much. the factory distributors had a lot of degrees in them.

I'm at 12 BTDC. Any more initial timing and I'll hear pinging.

                        Gentlemen,
This is what works for me and my RS23V0A****** GTX: Prestolite dual point distributor with 12° BTDC @ idle (1200 RPM) recurved to yield ~ 22° @ 2600 RPM (no vacuum) for a total of 34° (crankshaft degrees @ crankshaft RPM). Because of the 4.10 gears, it winds up quickly. I use the highest octane fuel l can get (sometimes leaded Sunoco race gas....very $$$ but it runs well) and Champion UJ-11G or HO-8A spark plugs (non projected nose platinum electrodes)....sorry NGK boys. I also run slightly richer fuel ratio (~ 12.5:1 @ WOT) to avoid or reduce detonation because of the 11.0 compression ratio (never again as good fuel was available when I built the engine not now).
                        Just my opinion of course.
                        Bob Renton

And every engine and combination needs to be tailored to what it likes. Was the engine in question ever rebuilt? Was it rebuilt exactly to factory specs? And is the gas you're using the same as it was back when the engine was originally built? :D
