with 15" tires being harder to find. I'm thinking of buying new wheels, for my 62 Plymouth Fury wagon. With that said , what size tire are cheaper ? those for 17" rims/ or for 18" rims ?

You need to worry about tire availability too. I have 17's because I wanted more sidewall, but there aren't a lot of them available, more 18's.

I went with Toyo 17's from Tire Buyer.com. Free shipping and they had a $75 rebate too. Seems I paid a little over $400 all in.

I run a 255-50-17 on one of my cars which I set up about 10 years ago. Like others have said, the tires look good because of the sidewall height and these about the same height as the old 255-60-15. The problem is only a handful of manufacturers still carry this size and only a couple with tread designs that don't look goofy on an older car. If I had it to do over I would probably look for 18's or like my current build, go to Diamond Back Classics for some custom 15's. You might not like the price but they are of excellent quality and appearance.

I would rather save the money and buy the proper tire and wheel setup than try to get whatever is cheaper. Could you imagine investing in 18's and deciding that you hated them for whatever reason? Decide what the car needs, what you want, and then spend accordingly. Buy once, cry once...
