To Log or to HP? That is the question.

Hello all. 64-65 B bodies. You know and love them. As I inch closer to dropping a 440 where a 273 is now, I realize there are two options for the exhaust manifolds. You have your early “Logs”, and your later HP manifolds.

So what’s best? Who’s done both? What’d you like? Dislike?
If it matters, I’ll be running a 440 with an RPM intake, with my current vacuum brake setup and factory power steering.

I have run both on my 1964 Polara with 440. I currently have the '62-'65 log manifolds on, now, for a more original look. I used to have the HP manifolds on, with '69 headpipes to the mufflers. I found these pipes dropped straight down from the manifolds, before bending back to the mufflers, and interfered with the '64 tie rod. '65 and earlier motors sat further ahead in the crossmember than '66 and later motors did. If you are having exhaust fabricated, you could have the headpipes bent so there is no interference, using the HP exhaust manifolds.

Unless you going for an Era correct look, or have the manifolds, consider the Header option. Extra power, and Fit the exhaust to match. I'm a Big TTI Fan. JMO, of course...

If you do not mind the lesser power, the logs will expedite spark plug changes. Have you considered triwyes?

These days I would do cast iron manifolds if it is a street car that will see basic driving.
As said above you will give up some power but may be not a problem for the type of driving you do.
I did the tri-y's on 2 projects, one a 500 inch RB and a 451 B. The 500 incher only saw street and little at that.
I drag raced the 451 allot and also30,000 miles of street use. I liked the tri-y's and was criticized by many thinking they would not preform.
My 65 Belvedere ran 11.90's with full exhaust and tri-y's.
It is all what your budget allows and if you plan on new manifolds, used, and the most expensive headers. Your call.

So the logs tend to fit better in every way then. Do you know if the HP Manifolds hit anything? Booster? Power steering?
