"MASH, before it got preachy".

The early couple years of the series, it followed the theme of the very popular movie it was based on
which was a lot of comedy, with some drama mixed in here and there.
When Wayne Rogers left and Mike Farrell replaced him - and especially as Alan Alda got more say
in the production of the show - the comedy gradually took a back seat and every episode turned into
a "lesson" of some sort, with lots of intentional angst and remorse sort of stuff.
It got "darker", in a word.

For the first few seasons it was a comedy. Then they made Allen Alda a producer and every episode had to have a “message” and comedy became secondary.
I wish I had said that....

Many here won't know (too young to remember)
Flip Wilson, Red Skelton, Red Foxx show, Carol Burnett, even Sonny & Sher
I hate Sher now, with a passion, but in the early years she was tolerable
& Sonny was actually funny
All variety shows & comedic stand-up stuff
Back when the country wasn't 'offended by everything'
& Comedy was actually funny, much of it even self-deprecating...
