Hello new here. Wondering if anyone has bought and used vintage license plates? What would be a fair price for new never issued plates? Also I am in Texas what is the process?
Car is in transit to me...1966 BelvedereII 440 auto will post pics when I get her!! Like waiting for Christmas!!

Welcome to the website. Don't forget to introduce yourself here (and we love pictures once you have the car in its new home):

Back to your question:

I paid $50 several years ago for a pristine Georgia YOM (Year Of Manufacture) license plate for my '70 Charger. The plate came from a well known collector in Georgia. I'll use the plate once the car is back on the road.

Tarrant County Texas DMV requirements are different from where I live. No doubt Tarrant County has an informative website for you to review?

I have looked but can't pin point what I am looking for. I will have to call . Thank you!

Here in md you can mount your vintage plates but you must have your current plates and registration with you.
I paid 40 for a set of nice 66 plates

I’m in Mineral Wells Tx, when you register your car at the dmv, you register as an antique, it goes for 5 years, and they’ll ask if you’re using year of manufacture plates, as long as they’re legible they’ll let you use it. They’ll even let you put a regular inspection sticker on your window.

That’s a shame about TX with YOM plates.
Illinois is pretty lenient about them. Get antique plates, then carry them with you while displaying your YOM plates.
There are places that will make up custom repo vintage license plates.
One of my cars was sold at Mr Norms. I had a 1970 Illinois dealer plate made with the number on it I was told was Grand Spauldings dealer plate number. I hope the info I got was correct, the plate cost me over $100!

We run Kowalski's Colorado plate on the front of the Challenger. Regular vintage plates on the rear. So far haven't been caught.

That article deltav posted looked like it was from 2011, I registered mine in 2019.

Here in TN, we can register same year as mfg. tags with our cars, no problem.
I almost did, then chose the "one pop and done" method - I got Fred an "ANTIQUE" tag instead.
You buy those once and there's no further cost with them - ever.

Antique and Classic registration can use YOM tags in Pennsylvania.

I had to take a color picture of the tag I wanted to use (must be correct year) and have a copy made close to the full size. Then submit this with the paperwork to PenDot. About four weeks for them to search and okay it for use. The tag is then permanently registered to the vehicle even if a new owner wants to keep it when transferred. One time registration fee.

Nice car! Wow, that’s a hassle, here in Texas you go to the courthouse with your plate, say I’m registering an antique, and I want to use YOM plates. They say do you know only drive to car shows (they really don’t care though) you say sure, pay I think $75, and you get your sticker.

Ontario if you want to run say 1969 plates you have to send the old plates to Service Ontario Verification for a condition inspection.

You can only run "year of mfg" plates.. so 1969 car can only use a 1969 plate.

How to apply

  • Call 416-235-2999 or 1-800-387-3445 (toll free) to confirm if the plate’s letter and number combination is available.
  • Have the plate reviewed and authenticated by sending both licence plates, the original vehicle registration permit, and payment to:
ServiceOntario
Kingston Production & Verification Services
Products and Services Office
P.O. Box 9700
Kingston, Ontario
K7L 5N2

It is recommended that you send the plates and vehicle registration via courier or registered mail. We are not responsible for plates lost or damaged in the mail.

Here's mine on my 1967 R/T. These are called Confederation Plates because 1967 was the 100th anniversary of Canada's becoming a country. They really stand out because it has white printing on a blue background, just the opposite of the majority of plates now in use. My plates were NOS, still in original wax paper wrapping, having never been issued for use. Here in Ontario, my plates and car ownership had to be sent to Toronto ( our provincial capitol ) to be verified as original. If the submitted plate has numbers showing up in the system as being registered to any other year plate in use, this plate is invalid and cannot be used. This includes trailer plates or registration numbers issued to boats or snowmobiles. Happily, my numbers were clear. I registered these when the YOM programme started, and it was quite inexpensive. Now the province regards them the same way as vanity plates and charges about $250.00 to register them ( one time fee ).
A lot of old car guys bought Historic Plates because it only cost about $30.00 annually to renew the sticker, as opposed to $120.00 for regular, vanity, or YOM plates. The problem with this reduced cost Historic plate was that it limited what you could do with your car. The car could not be substantually modified, could only be used for accredited car club functions, or test driven on your street. In its wisdom, the Province of Ontario determined that a cruise night was not a club function and began issuing tickets to car owners in attendance using Historic plates. Vanity and YOM plated cars were spared this fine.
Last year, in a move to gain reelection votes, the Premier of Ontario said he would cancel the yearly sticker renewal fee, and stickers themselves. Also, the previous 2 years of fees would be rebated to the plate owners. This worked, and he got reelected. Now, people are returning their Historic plates because there is no financial advantage of having them with all their restrictions. One local collector with a large collection of Cadillacs and other GM's had $8500.00 rebated to him under this incentive.

Get informed on your State. YOM in California was a cluster to get done. Inept DMV etc. Also, the numbers or letters may be exclusive to your year of car. Get it right, buy the right plates the first time. Make sure they are clean, with no liens.

The silver lining is once you go through the initial hassle, you can transfer the same plate to another car just by paying the fee, and presenting the current registration paperwork. I just did this last Thursday when I transferred my YOM antique plate to my latest GTX. I was concerned that changing the sticker from '68 to '69 might be an issue, but it wasn't. The initial process was easier for me than most, as the tag was registered to my dad's Valiant back in the day, and I still had the original PA paperwork.

You should be able to find a clean set of 1966 plates for $30-40.-, at least thats the going rate around swap meets here. The rules obviously vary by state, so your local DMV website may have the answers.
