Hi guys-

I've been enjoying my 66 belvedere since bought this year and enjoyed so much till...i put it in the garage for the winter last weekend.

i've never done a gasket on a classic and/or on a american slant six car before so i wanted to ask tips from you guys!

first of many things i hope to complete is valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket. i have the parts (cork for the valve cover) and was wondering do i replace them DRY? or with something like RTV silicone?

do oil pans have different (maybe high temp. ?) sealant for it?

many thanks!!

I have never used cork gaskets but I would thing you may need to just to keep them in place.

thank you- is rubber gaskets more common on mopars??

and sealant for top and bottom both?

I use the black RTV/sealant on the top of my valve cover gasket. Don't use sealant on the valve cover gasket to head side so that way you can pull off your valve cover for maintanence and such.

If you use RTV silicone on a cork gasket, make sure it is only a 'smear', not a bead, and just stick it to the cover, as was said. I wipe a little smear of grease on the head side to ease removing. Same with the pan gasket; just stick it to the pan. I like KW Coppercoat or Gaskacinch, which work great to keep the gasket in place.
The GASKET does the sealing. I use a bead of RTV in place of a gasket in certain areas, like the rearend pumpkin or A/T pan.
You'll find that everyone has their own way of doing this. The above has worked for me for decades.
