Forgive me for being so cynical. All i hear is support for our veterans. In this case the veterans are the most important ones and thats the ones who endured combat and were wounded in the line of duty.
Again i asked the lady who delivers my mourning newspaper how her son was doing. I asked did he ever get squared away with his disability as a result of his being severely wounded. No she told me the VA tells them there very backed up. He does get a small disability for some sort of hearing loss as a result of the road side bomb that his vehicle ran over almost completely taking his leg off and other injuries and then there was the issue of him regaining consciousness and finding his buddies decapitated head laying in his lap.
The young guy is not in good shape, countless operations and just shoving more pain meds on him to the point he got addicted. He beat that and now has a minimum wage job as thats all he can really do. If it wasn't for his family i shutter to think were he would be.
His mom said he is doing ok but he really needs to get squared away with the VA.
Note that this happened years back and still its not settled. His mom told me its been a uphill battle and this so called the country doing the best for wounded vets is not really all that accurate. She has gotten some help i think she mentioned from local politicians so far. Lets hope this young guy gets what he deserves so he can have some sort of stable life without worrying about paying the rent.

Its sad how our Veterans are treated by the VA. Hopefully things will work out for him and all Vets one day.

have a family member, or even you can call, 1-877-war-vets and get him the help and support he needs and deserves.

Remember , please, everyone...If you know a vet, or hear about one, that needs help there are many ways to get that vet help other than the VA directly. Like any other overburdened and miss managed organization, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. It's not right, it's not fair, but it is what it is. Start squeaking....the VA will respond to pressure. Absent all other avenues of getting help, call your state Senator direct. He or She will have a staff who will jump right in on the case.

1-800-342-9647 Military One Source. They are there 24/7/365 to help with absolutely anything. They will record his info, figure out what all he is eligible for and get him on track...

Ive discussed this with her and she is aware of all avenues concerning the VA. These are people who would never depend on a government help. Her daughter took over my sons paper route when he gave it up to go to college. When her daughters gave it up the mom took over. This is a woman who delivers papers and then goes to work in some department store. All she wants is to see her boy get the help he needs and deserves. Thanks for the advise

One of the reasons we moved to VT when I retired from the service is because I saw the handwriting on the wall, and read it correctly, that said that if you live in a large metro area, or a big city, the VA there will be overwhelmed in most cases. VT has a top notch VA system and less veterans to serve than NYC for example. There is no waiting, no BS. Just saying...

Bless her. Don't take this wrong, BUT, her attitude of not wanting to depend on government will get her son exactly nowhere. The government is not giving out charity to her son, they are giving him that which he EARNED the hard way, she must become her sons advocate and shout from the roof tops in his defense. it might go against her grain but it's what she must do.

Hell, get his name rank and serial number for me and I will go to work for him myself. And get results.

Its sad when policy is discard a vet and give a illegal the world.
The house has worked had on removing red tape and getting or vets the help they deserve. The senate keeps blocking their actions. Our senate is broken and needs a fix.
Trying not to get political just pointing out the problem.

Your right on the money on this one. The VA is terrible at taking care of our own in some cases, not all. My son had the same problem with injury to his foot in Iraq. He had pins and all inserted in his foot to heal and it still bothers him today. The VA says zero compensation for his injury. I served during Vietnam and glad I never needed care from the VA. It's a shame that our wounded are shoved aside when they need medical help the most.

There are other organizations that help. I contacted them all for my son they did try to help but to no avail.

I have been in the VA system since Dec of '94 after my medical discharge. Things worked smoothly back then, albeit kind of slow, and you had to be proactive by asking questions about what you had to do. Talking to your doctor went/goes a long way. When I entered the system, there were WWII, Korea, Vietnam and other non-combat related vets like myself. I used to be able to call for an appointment, and get it in 2 or 3 days, but with the huge influx of Gulf and Afghanistan vets, it can take a few months. If I call early, it goes well for appointments. In my 24 years of going to the VA, I can say I have nothing but great care and experiences. You do have to go with the flow when they change the way they work. I used to have to wait for hours on hold on the OLD 800 number, but now you can do a lot more, and it is easier with their website:

https://www.myhealth.va.gov/mhv-portal-web/home

I can talk to my doctor, refill prescriptions, and get appointments easily, and online with NO waiting, barring waiting on a response with your doctor which is usually 24 hrs as he has to check his inbox. The VA will work for you and with you, but it is a two way street. You have to be involved with you care and treatment too. The appointment system was changed, and after 2 years, I finally called in finding out the appointment system changed. I was dropped from the system, so had to re-enroll. I got a new doctor because mine was not accepting new patients. I said that that would not work, and insisted on getting my doctor back and I did. I moved, and ran out of medicine, so I stopped into the Denver VA, and got a 30 day supple to get me to Fla and enroll in the system there. I moved back to AZ, and was enrolled in 15 minutes AND saw a doctor the same day. Your location could have a big part with your experience. Larger cities could make things more difficult, more vets and less doctors. My doctor just retired, and had to have my appt cancelled, rescheduled with an interim civilian doctor, with an appointment on the SAME day, made only a few days out.

To Black64 and anyone else, ALL vets can go to the VA for care with a 214 or retiree ID card. You can also go in like sick-call, while you may have to wait to be seen. Black64, your son can go to the VA and even enroll for care and get a doctor assigned. Once he goes to appointments, he can reapply for disability again. If he got a medical discharge for his injury, it is mandatory to apply with the VA, or it was when I got out. You just have to go to your local VA office to get the ball rolling.

Good luck to you all...

Holy ****! I’ve always been taken care of for my injuries/compensation.
This Veteran needs to get with his County Veterans office and they will run with it. Also contact his area Congressman/woman.

At a minimum he should be receiving about 40% for his injuries. VA math is *** backwards, so don’t think if you’ve lost an arm/leg, you get 100%, it doesn’t work that way.

Hope he gets the help he needs ASAP!

Thanks, I only know what she (his mom) tells me and the fact that the young man suffered awful injuries plus traumatic stress.

Wish I knew his full name and SSN....I would kick some serious government *** for him..

I have heard many of these horror stories, but my own experience has been just the opposite. I have no trouble getting an appointment whenever I need it, much like 5.7Hemi said. So far I have received whatever I have asked for/needed and then some, be it compensation or care. If it's beyond my local clinics ability, they make an appointment for me at Great Lakes Naval (aka Lovell Federal Heath Care Facility). In talking to vets I served with, I am convinced that the difference seems to lie in the various VA regions. Maybe I'm just in a good one, but Gotta give credit where credit is due. Counting my blessings.

I agree, there are many , many VA facilities that excel in care for the veterans.

The old man I took care of used / visited the v.a. quite a bit. It's definitely not a perfect system but it does work! Sadly it's as stated the squeaky wheel!!!! He was very squeaky and I'm very large so when we went there we were treated like royalty. But over the phone forget it . Be prepared to waste half your day if you need to call these people! But for what they have it's not bad ! We have a huge area and alot of vets!
Hope this kid gets the help he needs !
