Any way to research a VIN on a 68 Charger to find out how the car came originally like color, interior, tansmission?

Color can be had from the fender tag. I think for nthe rest you need the buildsheet, or clues from other areas.

There is no way to find what you are looking for V.I.N. or otherwise.

If the factory kept track of it it was never released or lost.

The first year the colors or options amounts are available for is the 69 model year I believe. It won't tell you much other than the % of how many were built for the entire model such as Coronet. There is no break down to sub models such as Bees or R/Ts.

Problem is I have no fender tag or build sheet. Just the VIN

Unless the car has been dipped/stripped there is ALWAYS telltale areas that will show the original color.

Look at the metal on the underside of the package shelf, up under the dash, behind the kick panels, etc. Those areas are also not subject to the sunlight and will show you what the color REALLY looked like from back in the day and not what many THINK they are today due to the big shade differences when using the original paint codes that are now crossed over for base coat/clear coat. Often times the new colors are not even close.

I was able to determine a lot about my `68 Road Runner without a fender tag or build sheet when I dissmantled it for restoration and during the process of the resto. It was just a rolling chassis without the interior. Color, no power steering or power brakes, 4 spd, color of interior and headliner and was born with a.c. which ment tinted glass and a 26" radiator. Still no way to really prove it though except your own photodocumenting.

Vin

Thanks Guys. I was hoping somehow there might be some way to research the VIN and find this out but I guess no way.

Well, you can tell if it had bucket seats by the presence of the factory reinforcement plates. You can probably tell if they have been added or are original, if it does have them. You can tell if it had a maunal trans by the presence of a Z bar bracket, and a 4 speed by a hump, and if it looks original or cut in. You can aslo tell if it had a/c because the cowl is different.
