Hey all,
I’m a new member but have been searching and reading on the site for months now. I have a bit of a question that’s also a pretty cool story. My dad’s first car was a 1972 Roadrunner 340. He did a ton of work to it as a teenager and sold it to put the down payment on his first house. About 15 years ago he bought it back from the guy who was in the middle of a nasty divorce by simply landscaping his backyard in order for them to sell their house. One problem, the car was totaled. It was rear ended by a guy in a huge F-250 and badly damaged the car. My Dad and his friend completely redid the car to get it running and driving. He used a Satellite body as a donor. But my dad wasn’t right in the head for some reason and didn’t keep any build tags or the vin plate in the dash. (Please don’t ask why, I asked him plenty of times.) After it was drivable we moved from Las Vegas to Maryland where we are now. The movers lifted the car with a forklift because they were afraid to drive it. They punctured the gas tank and the car pretty much sat in a barn for the next 10 years. Fast forward to now, my dad finally has his dream garage with all his tools and everything he could want, including the car. We pulled the valve covers and carb off, the engine is in perfect shape. So here’s my question, is there any other vin locations on the car. We don’t have the title and my dad is no longer in contact with the guy he bought it from. All we have to go off of is the satellite vin and we don’t want to get it registered with that. It’s a 1972 340 Roadrunner. I imagine the vin has to be somewhere stamped on the body or engine. I’ve checked the trunk lid, and radiator support as well as the door and dash tag. All 4 of those are a satellite. Any ideas? Thanks!

I think by 1972 the roadrunner was nothing more than a option package on the satellite. That might explain your delima.

There should be partial vins on the radiator support and the cowl, driver's side. Additionally, if it still has the original drive train, it should be stamped onto the engine and trans.

Good Luck.

Welcome to the site.

Now with the amenities finished, if you are trying to find an original VIN in order to try to title/register it as that, it won't happen. Besides being illegal, the only VIN the DMV will use is the one on the dash. Trying to modify or change the VIN tag will not end well when you try to register the car. Leave the VIN alone, register/title it as is, and build it however you want.

Good luck with your project.

Ok, you don't have the title... where & to whom is the last title registered? Next.. he didn't "keep" the dash VIN ? Why would it be removed or missing ? Sorry, something doesnt jive here.

I know it seems stupid that we cant find the original vin tag. But the entire body is off of a satellite. It was a rushed project when we did the body swap. we didn't have the ability to come online and talk to you awesome mopar heads about the issue and run the vins. i have a feeling i have the original vin tag in my trunk. I'm going to go through and look tomorrow. Engine and Drivetrain are the original out of the Roadrunner. I got the build code off the engine, any vin locations on the drivetrain? Thanks guys!

Number Stamped on the engine: 2780930-340-3 with a big 4 beside it. any meaning there?

Thanks for your help. You b-body folks are the best.

Ok, I thought as much, as to what's going on. The entire body is not "off of " a Satellite, it's a unibody, so what you have IS a Satellite, and its VIN of it's own. Where is the Road Runner body ? If it was totalled, there may be a DMV record for that VIN as totalled. I won't go any further here, but I'd just offer sincerely friendly advise.. be careful of what you may be doing. Others can discuss legalities of what the appearances of your post infers.

We rightfully and legally own both the Satellite and Roadrunner. The satellite was taken out of a junkyard in Arizona. The roadrunner is also ours. The car was totaled when I took it back into my ownership. Yes, i have a satellite with roadrunner guts. therefore, im asking for vin locations on the guts of a roadrunner. The roadrunner body is mangled and more than likely destroyed in a junkyard in Vegas. The title I do not have. Todd, (previous owner) has passed and last we knew he still had possession of the title. Like i said, he was going through a nasty divorce and didn't have time to fiddle with a title. Legally, the car is ours. I am a Sargent for the Maryland State Police, I know the legalities of this. I'm simply asking for locations of the vin on the guts of the roadrunner. Ive checked with the DMV of Nevada, they cant do anything. Even using my abilities as a law enforcement officer. I dont care if i have to title it as a salvage with the satellite vin, no problem. I want to know for my dad and for myself. that's all that im after. so before you begin to discuss legalities of the situation, im ahead of you. So, back to my question. Is the vin stamped on the trans, engine, bell housing, or anything of that nature. Thanks everyone for your help. WileERobby, I'm being very careful. no laws are being broken.

Cop or not, I smell fish, don't you guys?
:dontknow:

Okay come on guys. What's the issue? The car is not being sold. The car cannot be registered as a Roarunner. I just want to know for our own good. My dad is 58 years old and is one hell of an honest man. I would love nothing more than to print out all the info on his car and give it to him. There's quite an incredible story behind the car. In the state of Maryland, they can generate a vin and it will be titled as a "street rod" there's nothing fishy here. If you guys don't wanna help fine. I'll delete the thread. All I'm looking for is for some help from some car guys. Nothing more. Thanks for the few answers I have gotten though.

Form what I have learnt for the Kansas Department of Motor Vehicles while living there there are supposed to be 7 locations of vehicle identification and unless you have the original RR dash pad the rest where lost when going to the Satellite body. Surprised you being part of Highway Patrol and not go to your local inspection station for this information. The RR Vin would have started with RM23 your Satellite Vin is different.

thanks for your help. Maryland is strange. I can title a vehicle under the street rod modification with what has happened. I just checked my email and the supervisor at the Maryland Vehichle Adminstration informed me of that. I just need to prove original RR vin and satellite vin. Thanks guys

On your cars the last 8 of the vin is on the cowl plate above the wiper and on the left side of the core support upper cross member.
Yes you can get a state issued vin number. Under Federal law you can't transfer a vin tag from one body to another but you already know that.

Just yanking the old chain Alex.
I wen't through a similar situation not to long ago and got beat up by some of the guys on here. While all my Vins match, the car is complete and I have the broadcast sheet, I couldn't find my fender tag. I had replacement stamped just for shows.

If you have the original RR seats in the Satellite check under bottom of back seat, bottom of front seats or maybe back of seats if it has buckets. The build sheet will have all the information to verify the RR's existence and any options it came with. Will do no good at DMV but will provide all the info you were looking for. Should have mentioned this in original post.
