Are they "single-use" type bathrooms ? Where only one person is utilizing the accomodation ? Ergo, either gender can use same.

That right there means you can take your gal in with you.
You ever been to a bar and the sink is ripped off the wall in the restroom ?
Same / same except the sign was missing.
