1968 GTX / Hello everyone. When does a project become a pain ( I HAVE REACHED THAT POINT ) . I cant figure out were the holes are to mount this mirror? Can only find the center one and when I do find the center one the mirror base lands on the steel trim in front of the head liner (I KNOW IT DID NOT LAND ON THAT TRIM BECAUSE THERE ARE NO HOLES IN IT. Also. My visors are installed and the tips almost touch each other and would never fit pushed into the mirror because there too close together. The tips are stock and don't push in any further to spread the gap I need. What am I doing wrong here? TWO PROBLEMS ON ONE MIRROR. Thanks:hello2:

Dave, Just finished doing mine on 68 RR . I think your visors need to be slid furthur down the shafts so the tips are not so close together. What I did to mount the mirror base was to feel around through the headliner ( must be carefull ) for the indentations for screw holes . They are there to be sure. I used a scratch awl to punch through after I found them. Just be carefull. Your tip ends should then be in position. I will try to post some pics of mine for you. My mirror base does just touch the front headliner moulding trim also.

You may want to rethink the comment about the visors. The tips are mounted on the ends of the shafts so even if you slide the visor itself down the shafts the tips won't change position. The only way the tips will move further apart is if the entire visor is moved.

Yeah. I tried to push those tips in before posting but they dont go. These visors were pretty much untouched when they came off the car so I would think they should just re-attach. It is nice to know they dont touch the front molding like I thought ( THANKS 68 CHICKEN ). I will have to keep feeling around ( THE CENTER HOLE WAS EASY TO FIND BECAUSE IT IS INDENTED ). As for the tips, will have to think about this one because the visors are in the right holes because of the 3 screws by the shoulder seat belt.

Those tips dont push in. Does the seat belt are look right. Cant move them over anymore.

I would have to think that the visors are in the correct location. When you consider that you have 4 holes..the large center hole and then 3 screw holes.

I added some pics but would agree with you. I cant believe I am stumped on this.:blob1:

Don't know what to tell ya Dave, Maybe someone can get a photo or two of there set up to see if there is any difference. I know its to late now but I always take photos before I take something apart that may cause a problem. Hind sight is 20/20 they say...

Yeah Red. I didn't even own a digital camera when I took this apart. I am going to wait because I am missing something on these tips. As far as the mirror holes. I got the center one in and the others should line up even though I don't feel them. Thanks for your help Red and maybe someone will tell me if that is right near the seat belt section up high.

I have tried to slide them but that rod is solid all the way through the visor. I even turned the triangle part but it only lines up one way and what RED said there is a big hole through to the roof. These visors are the same dimensions so there is no right and left. This cant be this hard but look how far I am off. I took the visor tips off so you can see better.

Hey Dave, i snapped a couple of pics of my GTX for your reference. im almost 100% sure my headliner got replaced at some point (no seatbelt bracket installed).

mine doesn't have the tips, and the pass. side doesn't even have the end sticking out of it! lol it looks like even if the pass side had the end sticking out of it, it would fit, me thinks.

my bracket is installed with the ball for the mirror facing forward, this is really the only diff i can see.

Well thats a start. I have the mirror backwards for start. I did not install the other 2 screws. Just cant figure out why those tips are so long. I will study your pics. I have had those visors off three times and even spun the triangle. Thanks.

Well I found the other two holes for the mirror. They were under the trim piece. Now when I put the trim piece back on those holes thru the trim piece dont even hit the roof. Still fighting the visor tips. Changed the visor from left to right but that did not change anything. Just dont want to cut those tips yet.

I wouldn't cut anything, they were on there before and if no mods were made they should go back on with no problem....ya, I know..easy for me to say! The mirror screws should not go through the trim piece so you know its not right or you would have two holes there already. The drivers side visor looks pretty close to where it should be but the passenger side is way off. If you remove the top windshield trim are you able to look underneath the headliner and see the holes??

Those ends that have the rubber tips appear to be sticking out just a bit too far. Those ends where the tips are when installed correctly barely show any of the chrome portion and those tips are a separate piece it is not all one shaft as was mentioned previously. Also are you sure you have the correct mirror? I see mirrors from C-Bodies being sold all the time as fitting B-Bodies and yes they can be used but they are not correct and usually screw hole placement is different. Hope this helps

YOU GOT TO BE RIGHT THAT THOSE CHROME ENDS ARE SEPARATE BECAUSE LOOK AT MARPARS PICTURE ( THE CHROME END IS MISSING ON THE VISOR AND IT IS STILL HANGING UP ON THE HEADLINER SO IT CANT BE ONE PIECE ) . Well I did find the mirror holes but you got me wondering on that mirror thing. I took the tips off so you can see how far they stick out. I TRIED TO PUSH THE CHROME ENDS IN WITHOUT THE TIPS ON THEM BUT THEY WILL NOT PUSH IN. I AM GOING TO LOOK INTO THIS MORE BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO PUSH IN OR PULL OUT. THANKS FOR SETTING STRAIGHT ON THOSE ENDS COMING OUT BECAUSE I WAS GOING CRAZY TRYING TO FIGURE THIS OUT..

On my `66 Belvedere there are two separate pieces for each visor. I doubt they changed the design. They were a bit of work to get out for polishing (mine are chrome)...but they did come out. They were also a bit of work to get back in. You can even push them too far in if you are not careful. As long as there is sufficient room between the visors themselves to clear the mirror, then it's just a matter of twisting these pegs in far enough to clear the mirror base. There are no 'tricks', just a good grip with a pair of pliers and some twitsing/ pulling motion. Do this with the rubber tip removed so you can re-use them. Stay at it. You'll get them out.

here's a couple more pics for ya Dave...hope they help.

Yeah. It is amazing that the holes for the mirror were under the trim. When I put that trim piece back on the holes to fasten it the holes go right into the rubber window seal. I am going to probably have to velcro that trim in and silicone the screws to make it look like the screws are holding it together because I dont want to unfasten my headliner ( I hate fudging stuff like this but the holes dont even hit the roof to drill new ones to hold trim and cant pull trim back because it hits the mirror ) Thanks.
