What happened to 68-69 chargers ?!

I had 6-7-8 back in the 90s. Last one I fully restored I sold in 1999 for $8500. RT, triple black. No one would come look. Sold it to a flipper and he sold it next day for $10,000. Missouri. Go figure.
Now you see rotted out junk projects, not even decent parts cars selling for idiot $. Then there are the amateur cobbled half projects that sell for even more stupid money. Then there are the really nice cars, that bring absolute **** money!!!! I am glad they have such a following and people can afford to give that $$$ for them. I don't need nor want any at those $$$$.
Beautiful cars, but they drive no better nor faster than any other B body 70 and older.

I love the 68 R/T 1st
hands down the best looking year of Charger's ever produced,
the best front end, grill, bumpers, side coke bottle profile view, round makers,
driving lights & the round dual tail-lights

then the 69 Charger 500, not the 318 or slant 6's,
only the BB or Hemi cars
I loved the flushed grill, understated presence

then the 70 R/T, I liked the faux scoops on the doors,
but took a while to get used to the grill/front bumper, but it grew on me

& then the 69 R/T
in that order

(It seemed every squirrel (sorry, no offense) in the woods had a damn
DOH GL Cloned 69, it's just not my thing, people would always ask me
"if I was building a DOH GL" too, oh hell NO)

I like the 66 & 67 even the 71 R/T's/Super Bee also,
just never owned any, I had friends that did

I've had 13 (15 if you count 2 parts cars)
Charger R/T's 8) 68's (& 1 68 parts car)
4) 69s (& 1 69 parts car)
& 1) 70 R/T, looked like it beat with a sack of nickles
all were R/T's, all bucket seat, console & vinyl tops
even a couple SEs, a couple with A/C & TF727
& 7) were 18 splines Hemi 4 speed/Dana 60 cars

Man I really wanted a 69 Charger 500 Hemi 4 speed really bad
I knew of 1
but the guy would never ever sell it
I use to ride my bike by it & drool
even when I got older I'd stop & talk to the guy (he lived in Concord Ca)
every time his garage was open...
He died in the 90's & his son got it, he has no intention of selling it...

(same goes for the 68-70 RRs, I've had equal amounts of them too
mostly 8) 68s, 4) 69s & 1) 70, side beat to death like the 70 Charger was too)

Sort of strange, some people hated the 69 Charger 500 grill :realcrazy:

Everyone above, I bought for less than $1500 ($1800 for 1) SE),
all prior to 1992
they were all better than any of the ads you'll see today

my 1st Charger R/T GG1 & Black, I got for $350 in 1974, I was 15
I had it until 1989 (IIRC) like at least 5 different engine trans combos,
strokers, Blown &/or dual carbs, STR 6bbls, 4 speed or TF727 etc.
I sold it to my cousin & he totalled it 2 weeks later...

Nobody wanted them, they got no respect
they were just cheap used cars (gas guzzlers at the time)
I didn't care, more of me
Chargers sort of found me
people would call me & ask if I wanted one (another one)

I had 5) 68-70 at one time,
all stored under-roof, out of the elements
the 2 parts cars I had, are/were far better & more complete than
99% of the ads you see for a $25k-$40k cars today

it's crazy you couldn't - hardly give them away
in into the early 90's

now they are premium priced

go figure

There is 1969 Charger 500 Hemi 4-speed coming up for sale at RM Auctions Auburn, Indiana event on Labour Day weekend. White with red guts and stripe. Very nicely restored car that used to belong to a friend of mine here in Ontario.

I bought my '69 about 5 years ago. It was listed on EBAY for $35 large buy it now and I knew the guy was local. Somehow I got his name and number and weaseled out what the reserve was. Last-minute bid just over the reserve at $22.5 K. 1969 SE Silver/black blue leather. 383 AT console. A couple of issues but no big deal. No rust. Pic in my sig.

Almost the same order preference for me:
'68 Charger R/T
'69 Charger 500
'70 Charger R/T

'69 Daytona of course.
'69 Charger R/T
'71 & '72 Chargers next and followed by
'73 & 74 Chargers.

Love hideaway headlights; 2nd & 3rd gen.
Love the '68 bumblebee stripe the most.
Glad I bought my '70 Charger 500 (383 magnum, 4 speed) in 1985.

I could see myself in the future with a '71 or '72 Charger as long as it has a big block. A 340 would be ok too as long as it has a manual transmission.

Meanwhile, I'll continue to work on my other cars. Mental therapy and escape from the daily grind.

Pic below is my daughter and her 69RT. I've known this RT since it was purchased new from Crenshaw Dodge (LA) in Aug69 by a close friend. Arranged sale to #2 owner (neighbor) in 2010 and helped get it running (sat in a garage for about 10yrs). He moved a few years later. In 2015 got an email from him offering the car to me for what I would characterize as a bargain price before he put it up for sale for many thousands more. Daughter had been looking for a mopar so she could caravan with dad to shows and such. She's now happy owner of all original numbers/metal, fully documented 3 owner 69RT. Morale of the story, not sure, except you never know where/when one of these guys will show up:thumbsup:

Everything is going up with projects. I probably paid too much for my car back in 2004, but after seeing the prices on some you posted, I got a steal.

I'm finally in a place where I can finish the tear down I started back in 2004-2005 (Army life is not conducive to working on cars). I'll farm out body, rust, and paint, but do the other work. I don't want that stuff to look like amateur hour on a 70 V code. I wanted to have my car done before I hit 40. I missed that mark by 3 years.

lucky- he built one out of 3/4 of a car. Not that many people are willing to put in that kind of work.
I love these cars.

In 2000 when I bought the red one, my plans were to pull the front end and swap on a 1969 front clip. The '70 grille was so nice though. No cracks, no defects at all. It wasn't long before I started to appreciate the design. I know that some prefer the other years but I don't care.

That open design looks better to me than the 1969 version. I thought that if I ever got another Charger, I'd get a '68 for the taillights and grille.

The ratty car that I named Jigsaw....

In a sane world would have just been a $500 car for the way that it looked when I dragged it out.

Bent frame rails and aprons, torn core support...

This car was bought for $250 in 1995. I paid $5000 in 2019.
Now it runs and drives after replacing the entire front structure, rebuilding the original 383, adding front disc brakes and a 3.91 geared 8 3/4" axle.
I wonder what it could sell for today?
It is not an R/T, it is actually the lowest trim level that they made in 1970, the "XH" model.
I'd bet it would still sell for $20,000 or more and be sold within a week.
I'm not selling though.

Sorry, Charger fans!
