What Is Ford Thinking?

I hear that the folks at the Mustang forums are having conniptions over this. Ford could have named the car any other name they want & had no backlash, so why Mustang?

We’re talking about it. Another name we wouldn’t be. All press is good press.

Didn't see the game or commercials but I think it won't Ford will sell to many.....for a while at least

Word on the street is that they’re sold out on pre-order.

Didn't we beat this to death when it was announced a few months ago?

Yep

For years, I have said that Dodge would have saved a lot of PR ''Hate" if they had called the 4 door Charger a Coronet or Polara, etc. But they wanted the very popular Charger name for sales and advertising. Ford is now doing the same with Mustang. They could name it Bronco, Galaxie, Fairlane, Falcon, Maverick, or even Pinto... And gotten a lot less PR Hate.

A Daytona is a 69 Charger not a 2005 Ram. A Charger is a two door muscle car. Two of my current vehicles are a 2005 Dodge Ram Daytona (yes orange or GoManGo) and a 2016 Dodge Charger Hellcat (Plum Crazy). Love both by the way. The Pacifica is a great utility SUV not a minivan. The Dart is everything from a 2 door muscle car to a 4 door commuter, not what they brought back. OEMs use recognized names to sell cars. Don't like it but it is what it is. Obviously I prefer Mopar, but I applaud the OEMs when they bring back cars like the current Mustang, Camaro and Challenger. Same when they try ones likes the Prowler and PT Cruiser, or Chevy with the HHR and SSR. Tired of the bubbles. Not opposed to the electric vehicles either but I believe these are more for sustainable everyday work cars, not muscle cars (maybe Tesla excluded). That SUV is no Mustang. Good luck to Ford trying to sell that it but I'm sure some of these new millennials will buy it. And they will be happy with their new "muscle" SUV, even if in name only. Most have no clue what a classic the 64/65 Mustang was. This is nothing I would ever consider but I could also say the same for any second, third or fourth gen Mustang.

Name game for sure. Name recognition has a lot of weight with those who have good memories of the name in the past, even if they never owned one. It's always been used to get that first bit of attention, which for a lot of people is enough to make them talk about it (here) or buy one.

A Charger WAS a two door muscle car.
I remember when Harley brought out the Evo engine in 84. The faithful said it wasn't a Harley.
Funny, it read "Harley-Davidson" on the gas tank.

They sure came around.

They still say that about Sportsters, though.

Ford was probably thinking that RWD, V8 cars aren’t the future.

We may think it’s lame ( I do ), but the millennials will buy them like hot cakes.

Ford has done it before. I love two seat thunderbirds, don't like the four seat birds much, but Ford sold four times as many four seat birds in three years as they did two seaters in their three year run. (And two seat birds outsold corvettes in 55, 16,000 to 700.)

They sure came around.

They still say that about Sportsters, though.
Well, they say, "its just a little Sportster".
Now, the VROD they hated those. they weren't real Harleys because they were water cooled. Now Harleys have water cooled heads and the vrod is no more.

I don't think gear heads hate technology and change so much, but they disrespect the companies usage in handing out car names!
Yep, car companies have been using great car names on lesser cars for decades. Remember 5000 lb four door suicide door thunderbirds? Or 150 hp GTOs in the mid seventies? Or the Mitsubishi "challengers" mopar sold in the late seventies? Sacrilege all!

Its fugly and fubar almost as bad as the Edsel.

Its fugly and fubar almost as bad as the Edsel.

Ah, that's what the E stands for in Mach E...E for Edsel.

BTW, Mach's first name was Ernst. An Austrian physicist.:D

I agree, although Ford is coming back with that too. I think in 2021.

So, if they can have two totally different vehicles with the mustang name, why couldn't they have two vehicles (at least both of which are SUVs) with the bronco name?
