Wheel upgrade on my 65 Satellite

Wow you can really lose track of time reading through these forums! Lots of great info and sometimes can be overwhelming. Figured I would ask in the 62-65 forum...

I am currently in the process of doing a complete front end and rear end rebuild on my Satellite. All new Polygraphite bushings, new ball joints, tie rod end, steering linkage and adding a sway bar. Also doing a disc brake conversion up front. In the rear, new leaf spring bushings, shackles and +1 rear leaf springs from springs and things.... Brings me to my question. My 14" Torque Thrust wheels that were on the car, will not work with the new setup and I am looking into buying new wheels and tires. Was considering going to a 15" Torque Thrust but have seen so many members cars with 16 or 17" wheels and really like the look.

If I went with a 17" wheel - what is the biggest wheel and tire combo I can run on both the front and back without it rubbing or causing issues. The car is virtually stock in the rear and I did NOT relocate the springs inboard nor do I have a mini tub. I am planning on running a set of drag radials on the rear and the car is a street/strip car.

Any help is greatly appreciated and pictures are a bonus! I have seen a ton of chargers and roadrunners with the wheels but our cars are not the same and hoping to get info from my particular group

Our 64 Sport Fury is running on 16x7 A/R polished aluminum wheels with 225/60R/16 Michelin Defender tires. Clears calipers on all 4 corners and kind of stays close to original tire size . Handling is excellent and brakes are very sufficient and no clearance issues. :lol:

First off, if you want to run drag radials, i would stick with 15" or 17" wheels, the choice of dr's in 16"sizes is seriously small.
I have a 62, but since i think the openings and space available is similar to your 65, this is what i run. I have 10 1/2 x 28 slicks (probably similar to 295/60x15 dr) on 15x8 1/2 centerlines with 4 7/8 backspace, but i have to use a .300-.350 spacer to keep them from rubbing, and they are probably too tight for street use. I also have 10/28x16 slicks on polished tt2 8 1/2 x 16, 4 1/2 b.s, that fit well, probably similar to 275/60x16 dr (if there is such a thing).
For the fronts, ive got 235/75x15, but they are probably a bit too tall. They were bought for their height for a bracket racer.
I like seventeens on our cars, but ONLY if they have enough sidewall height to not look like rubber band tires. Ive got 17x8 1/2 rims with 255/55x17 nittos on the back of a 57 chevy wagon, and they fit great (4 1/2 b.s. again). If they fit on a 57 chevy, they will probably fit a 65 mopar! 17x7s on the front 225/55x17.
You have the ideal condition, you have a set of wheels that fit, you can measure the backspace you have, figure how much more room you have and what the backspace needs to be. The right backspace is critical to fitting the most tire possible. The problem is with one piece wheels, they have only the one backspace set by the manufacturer, whereas a two piece wheel can usually be had in a couple different backspaces. Concensus here is that 4 1/2 b.s. seems to be the best choice for our cars (in the rear) whether 15 or 17.

I do love the gray torque thrusts on your car. If it were mine, i would do the exact same wheel, in 17x7 and 17x8.

That’s all great info thanks! I am still considering the torque thrusts for sure. Just bigger than the current 14” ones on it. I was also looking at the black and aluminum torque thrusts as well. Those are sharp looking.

what is the front tire/wheel setup in that top picture?
 
The centerline autodrags are 15x3 1/2 with 165/(80)R15s. I went to the MUCH taller 235/75x15s on the tt2s to cut down on red lights. (29+" for the 235s, around 25 1/2-26 for the 165s). Where i am comfortable leaving on the lights, too many reds to suit me.
A taller front tire has two effects, it slows reaction time, cause it takes longer for the taller tire to break the beams. It also gives the car more of a rolling start, so the car will appear to be a little quicker. (Of course, it really isnt).
