I've been shopping at the mini-mart (family owned and operated) here in Mexico for a dozen years or so and this never happened before. Background: Recently the family members who have worked as cashiers have been supplanted by a new hire. This is a new young girl with braces who, so to speak, is in the prime of her life (if you know what I mean). Well, I'm a grandfather now but regardless, my heart goes pitter-patter when the girl (name unkown) hands me change from my purchases. No sooner had I kinda "fallen head over heals" she disappeared for a week and I resigned myself to the fact that this upcoming generation doesn't know what it means to work. Well, before long I was going to eat my own words.
I got all excited again when this goddess was back at work just last week. I tried to stay away, but when I needed another quart of milk or another bottle of bear i had no choice than to return to make a purchase. i tried my hardest to mind my own business, but I could not resist trying to make at least one "clever' comment or question before I left. Anyway, I felt guilty afterward, but justified these school boy feelings when I mentioned to my spouse that I imagined when she was the same age she was probably equally attractive.
Anyhow, what blew me away this morning took place when I set the half-gallon of milk down at the register counter. This beautiful young thing extended her petite, soft, perfectly-formed right hand across the counter toward me! What was I to do? I extended my right hand where it met hers in the middle. Well, I guess you could say "Que Sorpresa Tan Agradable" which means "What a Pleasant Surprise". I don't remember a cashier ever offering to shake my hand like that anywhere, anyplace. And me as a grandfather, maybe this is almost too much (at least I didn't drop dead from a heart attack). Maybe to someone else, this incident is no big deal, but honestly it had a big impact and made my day. Quite the contrast with all the bad news I am bombarded with night and day. As I get closer and closer to my own demise, the little things seem to have more import.
Well, since no other customers were present, I took the opportunity to explain to her the significance of the Fourth of July to us United States citizens. That was my "clever" comment of the day. Happy Fourth of July to you all!
