Which Resistor?

Last week I had my 66 Belvedere on a 200 mile cruise and the ignition resistor died. I know one of the rules of old Mopars is to have a resistor in the glove box. I had one (no idea what ohm it is), but I'd like to know what ohm resistance is the best for a 440 with Mopar electronic ignition (Orange box). I managed to pick up 2 resistors at a local Pep Boys (one 4 ohm, one 12 ohm). I'll keep them handy because I've also got a 64 Dart with the slant six. I figure the 4 ohm would be the one for that.

I can't answer your resistance question. I have always just asked for the resistor for year make and model. In some cases the resistor failed because it gets hot, is mounted on the firewall, therefore a drop of cold rainwater can crack the ceramic block and break the wire coil that's encased inside. I have mounted mine in a sardine can on the firewall . Drill a hole in the bottom center of can , put a dab of silicone around the hole and mount the ballast in it on the firewall (end of problem)

I had 2 resistors that measured 1.8 ohms (at 70 degrees). I read that the mopar electronic ignition uses the 1 ohm resistor so I ordered two of the 1 ohm resistors. When I got them I tested them and they both read 1.8 ohms. I also have a .5 ohm resistor that reads 1 ohm. Not sure how they rate them. I am using the 1 ohm resistor (reads 1.8 ohms), that gave me 7.5 volts at the coil, which is correct for my coil. Hope this helps.

The actual resistance of the ballast should be 1.0 to 1.2 ohms, measured.

Thanks Guys. I know I can always find an answer here. I'll check the resistance, and at the coil. In the mean time, I'll also keep a new resistor handy. Thanks again
