Who's got their engineering cap on tonight?

$4,500

I am an engineer and I would have serious reservations about designing (if I could) anything that mounts to roof racks to lift a person. Here is something that is likely much safer and reliable. Maybe you could start a go fund me for the purchase of this device for him? (FYI, you are a good friend to him!)

Here’s one that mounts to the car’s seat frame and actually lowers the seat to wheelchair height. You’d have to contact the dealer for pricing.

I like this one but it's more for a paraplegic type injury... He can't transfer from one seat to another... He's got hoists mounted around his house to get out of his chair for bed & bathing... Plus to get out of his chair to sit in a softer more comfortable chair.... And he needs help to use any of those....

Back in the day he had a 58 Corvette & a 72 Lotus plus his downfall he was a big hang glider enthusiast.. Been in his chair a long time.. His doctors didn't expect him to life ten years.. It's been 3.5 times that.. His friends keep him out having fun... Great guy, I've known him since HS..

I'll check into the other option... Thanks!

Great, we can get him into the car... How do we get him out at his destination? Trust me I know I can buy a solution but since he has limited funds & his insurance won't cover it.... Have you priced any medical type equipment? They certainly charge a premium...

Heck, the easy way would be a handicap van... But again $$$$$$$$
Just saw one on fake book for less than 2 grand. How much would his hospital bill be after a few falls?

Sounds like a cool guy! He’s lucky to have you as a friend.

When you find a good solution, post what the cost is and I’ll bet that the good folks here will help make it a reality.

This is exactly what I was trying to describe earlier.
Wild is he a paraplegic or a quad? What can he do? That may be another way to look at it as far as deciding what would best suit his needs instead of what he cant.
I'm with GTXman, I'm sure the great folks here would be willing to chip in for a noble cause such as this.

I have a friend in the same scenario, 40 plus years as a para. Motorcycle accident as a young man. His van has a lift, his 76 El camino, we just installed a set of Monte swivel buckets to, and we are about to breath life into his 74 Toyota Celica GT hand control automatic car. Have been helping him for years. Was servicing his furnace the other day , and he was pretty exited about a new acquisition, a complete ceiling mount trolley system for his bedroom to bathroom. Everything he buys, comes from a used equipment store, outfit, with the medical care equipment market being priced as it is, used equipment might be something to consider..

Unfortunately being in California used equipment goes directly to scrap... Theres a company in my business complex that sells new equipment & he tells me he could lose his contracts with suppliers if he allowed used equipment to not go to scrap...

OMG..... that, is a crime!!!

Actually, will be talking to my bud later today, I will ask him for the info on his supplier. Just wondering if buying a used unit here, at Can dollar's might make it feasible...

I'm checking here as well on used equipment. I have a friend in the med equipment business. I would like to know what vehicle that unit would be installed in as some are vehicle specific.

I think I understand the questions your asking earlier in your first post. The position of the load is what determines the loads on your 2 linear bearings only.
As far as deflection your inboard load location does not matter. The longest length of the shaft from where the load is located is what will deflect. It sounds like you have 170lbs plus the winch weight nearly 30 inches out and that is what you will need to determine the deflection.
I am a engineer. We have had two family members in wheelchairs my Dad made quite a bit of stuff to help his mom in the 80s, not much was available then. Its great that you are trying to help.

Guys, I appreciate the efforts but I've talked it over with him & I think we have a plan.. We are going to use the parts I have but we redesigned the support to have a removable/adjustable outboard leg, that way no cantilevered load, only a downward load spread between two roof racks, close to the outside edge where the rack attaches to the roof.. The rods are strong enough to support me without significant deflection when supported at both ends & I outweigh him by 75 lbs...

I mentioned store-bought solutions to him but he's always been part Okie like me... He likes home made solutions...

Everything I've machined still has a job, just not the original job...
