hard starting race car

I have a 500 stroker bracket car,727,4500 stall,etc...the car has a MSD 7AL 3,start button and ign switch, 2 optima batterys in the trunk,36degrees of timing,locked out,1000cfmcarb, 11.5-1compression,all the wiring has been gutted and rewired for racing only.Starting the car cold is usualy pretty good a couple of times, but once it warms up and it gets hot it is very hard to start,almost like the batteries are low or dead(I Recharge between rounds)The charge is good and I am puzzled , has any one have any suggestion for me to try in the off season???Any help is good ,It reallysucks when you are in the staging lanes and your mopar won't start!!!

recheck your timing with a analog nondial back timing light like one of those old sears penske lights.
Who's harmonic damper you using?

I am using a fluiddamper, but a proform starter witch may be the issue I am thinking?

almost sounds like the same thing mine does. only does it when its really hot outside and its been running for a while. seems like the starter gets to hot .....

Alot of guys swear by the Mopar Performance mini starter but I use the Meziere starter.
TS100 series.
Mine cranks over my B1 TS motor with 15.6 compressionh like its a /6.

When you lock your dist out at total advance they will crank over hard when warm. Do you have an ignition cut out switch? If not add one, then to start it leave it off until motor is spinning then hit the ignition switchy
. Should solve the problem.

It's the fact that your timing is locked out, so you're starting the car at 36deg instead of say 15deg. Do what Chris said and make sure that you are at 36deg, just in case your timing hasn't advanced on you and you didn't know it.

The starter you have might be a little on the weak side or it could be it's going away on you. You might take it out and have it rebuilt, or get a new one and use that as a spare.

Like Poppa J said, make sure your starter button is hot with out the ignition being on. This way you can hit the starter button while the ignition is not trying to fire and get the motor rolling over good and fast, then hit your ignition switch and let it fire.

The problem I see hear is that the motor is only 11:1 so I really don't think compression is a factor here.
My guts telling me weak starter or its way advanced.
AlL my distributors are locked out and I never had an issue .
I really dont like that idea of spinning the motor and hitting the ignition switch because when it kicks back, your going to have broken ring teeth after awhile.

I do have a start button and ign switch , I do spin it up then fire it up, The 7al3 box is supposed to retard the timing 20degrees automaticaly, but I don't think it works for some reason?? Also when it's hot sometimes it kicks back and knocks the snout of the starter..I have replace the snout on 2 starters at least 8 times , (keep a bck up starter in the trailer) ....

your timing is not at 36 degrees then. i bet its alot more advanced. double check it.

You can buy the Mezeir Starter off of Jegs or if you don't want to deal with them try Kar Belt, there good people.

I know its costly but just think of all the money you'll save with broken snouts, rings gears and the most important thing. PIECE OF MIND.
I dont worry anymore when I'm in the staging lanes if my car is gonna start or not.

keep in mind that the meizere is also bigger.

we had one and had nothing but trouble with it, broke off some ring gear teeth. But sounds like SSR has had better luck.

You dont NEED a starter like that, we just have an msd one. Id get rid of the start retard on startup, never works right and like said make sure you have the correct timing. A big gauge wire to the starter. And good connections everywhere.

Or just switch to 16volt and solve all of your problems lol
