Use a Jeep pilot bushing and cut down the pilot on the input shaft of the trans. (I've been tryinng to find a part number).

I ran into the same problem about 20 some years ago. I cut, I think, about an inch off the input shaft and then I think I was able to buy a pilot bushing for a big block that had an automatic previously. The O.D. of the bushing was smaller than one for a 4 speed would be. If memory serves me correctly!

There is a roller bearing pilot bushing for Jeeps (and Magnum V8s?) that fits in the converter register of the crank. You do end up cutting something like an inch off of the input shaft.
