I bought a 1974 Charger with the intention of restoring it for my son's first car. It is complete and the body is straight, but it has seen better days. My first problem is that I need some keys before I can tow it home. A locksmith told me that he could make me a key if I got him the code. He said that the code might be in my glove box or it might be someplace else.

There is about an inch and a half of rat crap in the floorboards so I was hoping that somebody might be able to give me some direction on where exactly this code was before I went crawling around in it looking for it blindly.

Thanks

Pull a door lock, or the ign. to have a key made!Glove box will work for the deck lid.I've never found any codes any where! When new there was a metal tag with the keys!

+1

The spares that I actually do have both have the tags on them. I've been all over my '72 and haven't found the codes anywhere. Moparsteve is right, pull the cylinder and have them make it from there.

I, however, would pull both door and ignition though. On the off chance that they're different. Stranger things have happened.

Why not just pull the steering wheel off and temporarily remove the steering wheel locking mechanism? Then you could order some new locks or get yours keyed after you get the car home and in no hurry.

If you want new locks, you can find them at www.rockauto.com ignition lock is about $25, a set of two keyed alike door locks is about $16, trunk lock is about $15. You could buy them and get the new ignition lock rekeyed to match the new door locks probably for the same price as making a key for your 30+ year old worn locks.

I got my satellite with no keys and took the ignition and drivers side door cylinder to a locksmith.. the next day he made me some keys and worked great.

If you are doing a resto, new matching locks are the best way to go.Sure, you can pull the ign & door locks to make keys.Back in my REPO days I had a master key set to open ALL mopars:eek:

ON A SIDE NOTE AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS THREAD, BUT HEMITIS JOGGED MY MEMORY ON IT:

a little known secret when it comes to mopars, is that even if the door is locked you can still get in by just hitting (with a balled fist) on the door lock. The door will still show as being locked, but you will be able to open it up as it jars the locking mechanism open.

go ahead and try it, my friend did it to me and I about crapped my pants. The locks I had on it were repo's and not OE so it really does not matter which one you do it to.
