Long story short, car had an intermettent starting issue I couldnt fix, and it was electrical. My dad had it towed to a shop, they change the starter (another story for another day, but my starter tested fine before...). He gets a call saying the trans is done. Apparently the trans was "slipping and screaming" to get over a hump in the parking lot. The transmission was fine when the car was parked in the fall.

A week ago, I changed the neutral saftey switch, pan gasket, and trans filter and fluid. Noticed some metallic shavings in bottom, but nothing concerning.

Thoguhts? I hope I bent the shifter rod or something...

BTW, forgive my typing, im at work.

This will be a 727 trans, the first thing I would check is fluid level, some techs don't realize the Chrysler trans is to be checked while running, in "Neutral". If they check it in park, as they would a Ford or GM the fluid will read considerably higher on the dipstick. Have them check that out before they roast your trans. As for a small bit of metal shavings, i would have to say that in my experience, the 904/727 will shed quite a bit of material between servicing, especially aluminum. It is not unusual to find some aluminum and a little brass laying in the pan.

From my experience,if you have a older tranny that is slipping ,the worst thing you can do is change the fluid.

agree

When I changed the fluid, the trans had no known issue. I changed the fluid because it lost fluid when I changed the neutral safety switch.

I will check the fluid soon, it should have 4.5 quarts in it now. I put in four quarts as per the repair manual, and the shop put in a pint after the trans was slipping since they thought it was low but I am unsure since I wasn't there. LIkely it is overfilled but I don't think it's the issue. Could this be a band adjustment issue?

I hate automatic transmissions and typing on iPods. Thank you for the help.

about how many miles on the trans?you could try a band adjust, but it may need a rebuild.if a trans is not serviced regularly burnt oil starts to build on worn surfaces.so when you put in clean fluid,or much worse flush it,you disturb the build up and cause failure.thats about the simplest way i can put it.

make sure your shifter bushings are not too worn and the transmission is "effectively" being emplaced in each gear.

when you changed your trans fluid did you check it in neutral? also i run it through the gears a couple of times as well then i check it warm at idle in neutral. what you are talking about sounds like low fluid if the trans was good before. that being said i had a buddy but a good trans from me it worked fine for 6 months then he took the car to a shop for some exhaust work and he got a cll sayong the car would not reverse! he brought it over to me i pull the dipstick and the fluid was black! i take a look at his tires and you could see groves in the treads from them doing burnouts! of course they denied it. sorry to rattle on

A little bit of an update...

I helped move the car the car today, and it acted like the emergency brake was on while moving (it wasn't). The car would rev high and practically move nowhere in foward and reverse, and there were no odd sounding noises coming from the trans. The car was moved in and out of a garage, that was it. Barely made it over the edge going into the garage with the engine at 3 or 4 thousand and me pushing.

Unfortunately, the car needs a head gasket before the trans gets more diagnosis. Any and all advice on the trans is appreciated.

Maybe your brakes could be dragging just a little. Its happened before and i thought i had a trans problem, mine set for a long time though.. But, may be something to check into, The way you describe it kind of sounds like its a possibility..

you need to get a pressure tester on each of your servo ports and governor port to see what pressure you are getting and then compare to OE specs. You car is either (1) not engaging into gear completely, (2) your VB shifter valve tunnel is bleeding off pressure, (3) your upper and lower VB plates are not securely fastened to one another causing loss in pressure, (4) you do not have enough fluid in your transmission, (5) your pump has failed, or (6) you friend the clutches on your front clutch drum.
