I took apart my big block 727, it was pretty crusty on the inside. A few of the drums and the shell has surface rust and the pump is screwed!
I am going to rebuild it myself, I have another small block 727 out of a truck I am going to use for parts.

The question I have is, can I clean up my big block case and stick all the small block guts inside of it? Will this hold up to a rebuilt 440? I might put a shift improver kit in there while its apart too. I heard they increase the life of a transmission. Any input on the subject is appreciated. Experiences?

A 727 is a 727 but even tho I'm not 100% sure, early cases may have some minor changes vs newer cases and yes, shift improver kits can help firm up the shift and reduce 'smooth' shifts which is more or less slippage. Maybe someone with more knowledge on transmissions will chime in....it's been many years since I rebuilt one....

Allpar.com has a good tutorial on Tflites. All 727s have many common parts and yes, a shift kit will actually improve the lifespan of the trans. Less slipping between shifts, less heat, less wear. Of course that doesn't take into account how much harder you will be driving because those harder shifts are so cool.:headbang:

Racedodge, a member here has helped me in a number of things regarding my 727.. If you look up some of his past posts you may find a great deal of information, I know there is others as well that knows these, im just letting you know because of what he was able to help me with some things.. Hes a good guy, just don't mention that to him.:) He has two sticky's threads here where yours is posted the first two sticky's are his, maybe you'll find a little information in them to answer a couple things. Good luck.

'367', As far as I remember, small block parts won't fit. Always was interested in big-blocks. I got lucky years ago and went to a local trans shop and pulled a hemi hi-gear drum from a scrap pile and proceeded to put together a hemi-style 727 that worked really well. Never asked where the parts came from though. From the same shop I ordered all the hemi-style kickdown bands, etc. Worked out well. If I remember correctly, the hemi kickdown(2nd gear) band was a 1/2" wider than normal 727's.

can the pump if it has rust, the drums and shells, dependent upon the amount of rust can be salvaged by sanding off the rust (as long as it has not pitted the drum/shell)... in most cases it is just surface rust.

Yes

Yes

They increase the life of the clutch discs due to less slipping during the transition between shifting from gear to gear, which in turn lowers trans temperatures thus increasing the life of your transmission.

if you plan on rebuilding it yourself, make sure you have:

drum spring compression tool
transmission lube (stuff you put on seals and metal-clad seals)
you soak your clutch discs for a minimum of 15 min prior to install
lots of carburetor cleaner
and.... get your components hot tanked to include your trans case and output shaft housing.

easier to work with everything clean and less chance of debris in your transmission

OH.... better have a good book (see my transmission thread in the engines/trans/driveline section) to help you learn. read it first then do, do not do both at the same time.

Good luck.

Thanks for the input guys, I have a chassis manual which has exploded view diagrams of the sub assemblies. Which is helpful.
Today I removed all of the servos and band struts and levers. I took the case to the local car wash too. Guess I am ready to tear open the small block one to get the better parts.
Can I just use new ATF on the o rings and piston rings in there?

You can use ATF, but I strongly suggest you do not... any metal to metal contact, during startup and breakin of your transmission, will need transmission break in lube (or you can even use vaseline petroleum jelly).

If you use regular atf, by the time you go to put your transmission back together, then install it.. the atf will find its way to the trans pan and not on the seal where it needs to be. Do it right the first time and you will not have any worries.

buy this, you can get it at summitracing or on ebay:

I had a good afternoon of moparing today. The smallblock guts are now in the big block case. Thanks for the tips guys. I just need a pump o ring and gaskets for the tail stock and exterior and I should be in buisness. I will throw some pictures up later on. Transmissions are pretty interesting to work on!

Here are some pics of what i'm working with, and what is going to be turning the tranny. My fresh 440
