What to do with a car that got a repaint in the 80s and was stored outside in the california sun since that??!!!?!?!

The paint was very weak, flat and burned from the sun. The color looked a little bit like „put all the rests in the paint-cans together“ a flat grey green…..

First I thought of a repaint but I wanted to keep it that weathered way. I thougt of polishing it one time, cause the paint on the car soaked water like a sponge!
Than during welding the rockers and between two beers, my friend Heiko took a piece of wet sanding paper and tried to get an effect on the uper side of the fender. We both were surprised! -It went brown, with a soft metallic effect!!!

So the idea was born! Let’s wetsand the hole car. It can’t look more bad than now.

8 hours later after wetsanding the fenders and the hood, with 4 types of sandpaper and a special sponge and polishing, it looked like the car got a complete new front from another car!!!

Great, let’s try the rest! :confused5:

I wanted to show the before and after effect, so I had the Idea to give him some cool candy stripes like the Ramchargers did in the 60s. Perhaps it will look like a real barn find weathered Gasser from the 60s….:grin:

The result surprised myself! I never thought it will look that good! Nearly no clouds in the paint.
I left a few areas in the old condition, sanded it only once and polished the parts. Like a two tone paint.

What is a Gasser Style without any lettering on the sides??
I’m still in contact with the last owner . He’s a nice guy, I like him and he had a shop for Engine rebuilding. When I received the car, I found an old card of his shop in the trunk, and if you do some letering, it has to belong to the history of the car.......................

Mitch is a Designer. He plotted out the lettering and we painted the Logos the classic way by hand, with a brush.

i dont think even the meguires muti step paint resto could make that look better and i have seen it restore some messed up paint.nice work, what a great idea with the stipes.

Wow! Amazing. Nice job.
Im in the same boat. 80's paint job. Faded. Tried polishing a year+ ago. But I think I may give your effect a try. I have some paint faded to almost bare.
What grits did you go with?

Excellent! I really like that color too. Thanks for all the pics!

Great job! I got tired just reading about all the work involved. Sure came out nice. You now truly have 1 of 1. I'm jealous of your wood pile!

THAT is SOOOO Cool! Starting to REALLY dig those old MOPARS! My Aunt had one, when I was a kid, thought it was the Fugliest car on the earth! Not now!

Thank you guys!!!!!
For the nice feedback.

If anybody knows one from meguires, tell me, perhaps they will finance the Wedge Engine... :eusa_dance: *LOL*

I just found a nice set of 60s Drag Mag wheels. I think that will make the look a little more perfect. Pics will come soon.

@coloradodave: The wood pile is from my landlord. i only have the small apartement under the roof of the house!
But he likes it, when there is something going on on the ground and I can use so much space here to do these things and have fun with Mopars....

:headbang:

Awesome "unpainting" job! And great pics to document the work. All that sanding probably put a few inches on the pecs and triceps too, huh?

Impressive! A lot of older or even original paint jobs can be brought back to life with a little thought and a lot of elbow grease. One of the things that is a source of pride for me is the paint on my 64 Belvedere. Sure it's a little spotty and imperfect if you look close enough, but there's no way I'm repainting it anytime soon.

After finishing, I felt like training lessons with Schwarzenegger!!!:grin:

@Smitty: I love survivors and like to see cars, wearing the scars of the years they have been through.
Your 64 looks great!
It was a little pitty, that my 62 didn't had it's original paint, but that gave me the space to start this experiment.
Keep your 64 the way it is! never repaint!!

@Moparstuart: World is a village! Your Runner is coming to my neighborhood! I'm sure you gave it in very good hands!!! The new owner is a nice guy and he will take well care of it!
