This forum has been a huge help in fixing up my 1971 Plymouth Satellite. I am currently looking at a rebuilt 440 engine from a local engine builder who only does MOPARs with the following specs:
- bored .40 over, speed-pro pistons coming in at just under 10 compression, hyd Comp cam with 525 lift, roller rockers, 3/8 pushrods, 3 angle valve job with 2.14 valves, 516 closed chamber heads,650 lift valve springs, crank is turned .10 on the mains and .20 on the rods, intake is a edelbrock single plane intake, a 750 edelbrock carb with a elec choke. I was told that this engine will make between 450-500 HP at the fly wheel. Price w/ 727 transmission 2600 stall is $7200. He can also build a stroked 440 to 512 - all the same parts as 440 but with the stroker kit adding 75 HP w/ cast iron heads. This is $9200 w/ 727 w/ 3800 stall. All internals forged. I am looking for street / strip. I am currently deployed to Afghanistan and do not have the time or bandwidth to conduct a lot of research. Any assistance / suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would seriously look into Carolina Machine Engines or a similar company. I had my entire longblock rebuilt (including heads), two rods replaced, balanced & bluprinted; for $3,000 with freight shipping and a single-three year warranty. He is installing all the 'wrong' parts IMO. Performer RPM (dual plane) intake or Victor single plane, Edelbrock 84CC heads, .557/296 Mopar solid lifter camshaft, Crane ductile iron adj. rocker arms, springs set up for max .600 lift; these are the 'right' things that you should look into and would tack on around $2,000. You honestly want less spring pressure than more, unless you plan on wiping out camshafts left and right. I would honestly get the shortblock rebuilt and cam installed/degreed by Carolina Machine Engines and then go on to install your heads and valvetrain at home (Should be very cheap for a shortblock rebuild/balance). Don't waste your time with the stroker, unless you plan on buying a set of Indy EZ or 440-1 cylinder heads and getting some port work done. 9.75:1 is about high as you want to go with Iron heads and pump fuel with any relatively decent timing. 10:1 is conservative with aluminum heads and is a good-all around compression ratio. Get the 727 rebuilt locally, and install the converter yourself; it is about the easiest thing you can do at home. Moparts.com always have plenty of converters for sale on their classifieds section that could save you hundreds. You want around a 3500 stall to match the camshaft above. The factory forged steel crank, and LY rods, along with some decent forged pistons will take more abuse than you could ever throw at them with an all motor 440. Why is he not telling you this? I also contemplated getting my engine rebuilt locally, the cost was nearly double of what Carolina Machine Engines charged and with NO WARRANTY! Also, just opt for a carburetor matched to your combination. Their are twenty or thirty companies online who will build you a great carb, matched to your combination, that is bolt on-and go. Don't even waste your time with that Eddy:BangHead:, my 451 with a Holley 4150 carb fires first turn of the key and idles dead cold with a massive solid lifter cam. You truly want a good carburetor for any performance, the Eddy is going to hold a lot of performance potential back IMO. If you really want a good street carb, the holley street avenger series with vacuum secondary's is a valid option. 870cfm would be my pick.

Keep looking, don't settle on your first Choice. You want a warranty. also the .40 over block is puxhing it. If you need help looking we will help you. Being your active Duty you are a special class, your entitled to help any time you need it. We are here to help you.

1. You want aluminum heads for sure.
