I am thinking about buying a 69 413 BB, he will sell it to me for $ 250. I think it is a good price, motor is complete except carb and distributer. I came out of a motor home and has the high water pump and different heads. If I get it, can I put the regular heads and normal water pump on it? I think the 383, 400, 440 stuff will fit on it. Any thoughts?

Umm, sorry to inform you, but 65 was the last year for the 413.

No it wasn't, its the last car version. Not sure where you get your info. Anyway, trucks and motorhomes, and industrial applications got 413s into the 70s.

I think I am going to get it, I heard they have good low end torque.

What would the compression ratio be on a 68 Motor home 413 and would it have a steel crank?

250 is high for a motor home engine, I gave 100 for my 72 with the transmission attached. The compression is around 7to1, if you get it use 516 heads the closed chamber will kick the compression up a notch.

He was asking $350, and that was with the tranny. I offered $200 just for the motor, he will not go down any more than $250 just for the motor.

I'd go find a 400 or 440, much easier to find pistons, about the same price, and as I recall, don't some of the truck 413s have a longer snout on the crank?

I am going to go with the 413 or a 69 383 2 barrel, I can get it for $150. Not sure what to do, I like the idea of the 413, but will do the 383 also. What do you mean longer snout?

The industrial/truck (heavy truck) had gear drive (cam is backwards). I thought some had a different snout (front of crank).

If you have to go with one I would go with the 383, You won't have to swap out the heads and water pump that will save a bunch of change. For my money I would keep on looking.

I'd 2nd the 383. At least it should have heads and water pump housing you could more readily use. Don't know when the or if the 413 changed from the extended crank but iirc, it was the back of it that was longer and was used in the early years of the industrial motors. You might could Wiki it or go to Allpar.com for more info about that. The 413 truck engine is not one that I'd want to pay much for. There are just too many 440's from motor homes available for a bit more money.....but yes, a longer stroke engine usually produces more torque in the lower rpm ranges but the 383 can spool up faster and produce horsepower quicker.

I remembered it was on end or the other that caused problems. 383 us much better than the 413 truck/motorhome/industrial thing. But, I'd either hunt down a 400 or 440 with normal heads, waterpump, pistons, etc.

If you want torque, go with the 413 or 440. The longer stroke makes more torque. The 383 heads, water pump, valve covers etc will fit. The distributor and intake manifold will not. Does the 413 block have the standard water pump mounting? I know the heads are different.

No, the 413 has the high water pump.

Just not sure how the stock water pump bolts to that 413 block after you put stock heads on it. The stock block has 2 coolant passage holes on each side in the front. (4 total) . If you put on standard heads, will a regular water pump bolt up? Because on the motor home engines the coolant went directly into (or from) the cyl heads. Maybe some one here would know if the blocks are different on a motor home 413 engine, because the heads are.

The stock water pump (and everything else but pistons and rings) are interchangeable between all RB's. I'm running a 1972 413 with 906's and stock water pump, etc. the RB blocks are functionally the same but for the bore.

How do you like the 413? If I get the 413 it will go in a Power wagon, torque is what I am looking for.
