I wanted sail panel molding for my 67 R/T. This is what happened.

just talked to "mike" AT B/E &A restoration ..their price was 155 plus 12 shipping...so I ask if they match price...he said maybe..."what's the other price?" I tell him 139.50 He asks "what is shippimg"? I say 20. He says..ok total is 159.50...I says it should be 139.50 plus 12 and he says I asked to match price. I tell him that's not to match shipping as his way is just hosing me. He says that is what I asked. I tell him to forget it and I'll get it elsewhere and be sure to spread the word.

Opinions encouraged.

Errr... no he didn't get jerked. The original price was $167 ($155 + $12). The second price was $159.50 ($139.50 = $20). Those are the prices that would have to be paid to buy the part. He requested a price match, which meant the guy selling the part for $167 lowering his price to $159.50, which was the price from the other guy. That is matching the price.

Where the vendor saves or makes their money is none of your business. Do you really think the second seller is paying $20 to ship the part? No. He's probably paying the same amount and charging more in shipping so he can price the part a little cheaper.

You can let your nose get bent and unfairly criticize the first guy, but keep in mind you're still paying $20 for $12 worth of shipping, so seller number two isn't doing you a favor either... but again, unless the sellers' business name is Salvation Army or Goodwill they are in business to make money not lose it.

Frankly if I were seller number one I would block your name from any future orders because you're likely going to be too much of a pain in the *** to deal with.

terzmo, I like your posts but kind of have to agree with Bruzilla on this one. We have no way of knowing how you approached Mike as we didn't hear the conversation. I'm not a good price grinder nor do I deal well with them. If someone is grinding me on price just to be a grinder, I probably don't wind up selling to them. If you were polite and Mike was the jerk, well, sorry about that too.

Either way, he did come down in total cost by trusting you on the $139 price point. I see a difference in perspective, not hosing. And really, aren't we quibbling over $8? Two beers? Life is too short to quibble over the small stuff.

I kind of have to agree with Bruzilla on this one. I have noticed a few businesses and sellers out there marking the prices of their items down, but charging crazy shipping and handling prices to make up for the price mark downs. It is a selling gimmick to get customers into the door and make them feel like they are getting a better deal than they really are. I think his offer to match the total cost of the part plus shipping was a fair offer and I would have been happy that they offered that. Just my opinion though. I am sure this conversation will stir up all kinds of opinions and emotions.

I'm with Terzmo on this. He asked if they matched price and the vendor didn't say no - he said maybe. Which first of all is something I don't understand. If you're running a business you either have a set price, are willing to match price or are willing to negotiate.

Terzmo was honest on his part and told him the price and the shipping. He expected a square deal. The vendor then changes his shipping to 'match' because its higher? They are willing to piss off a customer over 8 bucks? Sorry - that is one of the reasons that smaller businesses like this are getting my business less and less and Summit and Jegs are getting it more an more. Set prices. On time deliveries. No hassle returns.

I experimented with a restoration parts source out of the Carolinas once on a 1st gen Mustang build.



They listed good prices in their catalog. Really nice pricing.

So I ordered a bunch of stuff from them.

Afterwards I was looking over receipts on the project and I discovered how they could price things so much lower than their competition. They were making all their money on the "shipping charges"

Outrageous shipping charges, that's where they made up for the low list prices.

In the end, they were much HIGHER than the competition, they were just really sneaky about it.

And THAT, is getting hosed.

I don't see you getting hosed or them being jerks. You asked for a price match, and you got one! You would have a case to make if the parts weren't being shipped and you were picking them up, but shipping was part of the price.

No offense, but I will stone cold guarantee you that "Mike" has already forgotten about you and moved on to helping dozens of other customers, while you're busy ranting and looking for support. Customers who try to nickle and dime a transaction like that aren't needed at any business. You asked for a price match and he was good enough to give you one. Then that wasn't good enough and you wanted him to take an even bigger hit, and he's the one being a jerk?

To me, it sounds like the guy was working with you, he didn't have really to price match anything... I don't know them or deal with him... But IMHFO it's not worth it, for $7-$8 for all the grief, let it go... Move on

So... what happens when you get a call and someone asks if you price match and since you're on the phone, and don't have fine print to read, you say "heck yes!". Then the caller says great because he saw that same part on a website for an outfit that's going out of business and is marked half off? Ooops! Then when the vendor starts explaining their price match policy doesn't cover sale, going out of business, or clearance prices, the caller goes into the "well you didn't mention that before" bit. In this case, it sounds to me like the vendor doesn't have a price match policy, but people are given some leeway in matching prices to make a sale provided it isn't a drastic amount, and the amount in this case fell within the criteria.

Terzmo asked for a price match on the price he stated, and he got exactly what he asked for. Don't see much hosing there.

I must have misread your original post. I thought you said he cut 15.50 before raising shipping 8.00. Was his total price still higher than the other vendor? Or is the other vendor hosing you as well?

You must have money to burn,...I don't, and like a smart shopper I try to get the best price available. He should of just said..no price match instead of trying to get a few bucks back on higher shipping than what is company policy. We wouldn't be discussing this if he did. He's a con artist.
