Finally got the car turn fire up long enough for me to move it. Now when I turn the key, it sounds like the starter is trying to turn the flywheel but can't. Engine stuck due to old fluids? Tranny shifter hard too. Fuel pump is old and haven't changed fluids yet.

If it does, you know there's something wrong. It might just be a bad starter. I always like to change the oil, remove plugs and squirt a little in each cylinder. Turn over by hand a couple of times, and if every turns smooth and sounds ok, then fire her up.

The starter is new but I just saw that fuel was leakin a lot from the line into the pump.

Make sure its not hydrolocked, i.e., the cylinders are full of fuel or oil! If it is, don't try starting it or you will break something.

Like he said, remove the spark plugs and try to turn it over by hand, or even w the starter. If any type of fluid (oil, gas, water, spinal) comes out of the spark plug holes its time to remove the head and see whats goin' on in there.

And yes, wet spark plugs are not normal. It doesn't necessarily mean imminent death, but the electrodes should be dry.

Fired up this mornin but blows fuel out exhaust and carb is wet. Line leakin fuel from pump. Id say carb & pump is shot.

There could be another problem. The starter might have snapped some teeth off the flywheel so there is nothing for the starter to engage with. You'll hear it spinning but the engine won't turn.

Are you sure its gas coming out of the exhaust and not water? If its fuel then you have an ignition problem (and a pretty serious fire hazard). I'd check the coil and its' connections. A crunchy wire there can cause erratic starting/running problems. Any fuel leak is a dangerous situation, get that fixed before you run the engine any more.

That's pretty funny....thanks.

If you are getting fuel out exhaust, my guess is 1 or more cylinders are not firing.. Carb float level maybe causing a flooding/ rich condition. If you are getting fuel to carb, the pump maybe fine. I would check that the fuel lines are not damaged at the pump, and they are seating properly. Use a flare nut wrench to work on the fuel lines, a open spanner or crescent can damage the line. Pull spark plugs 1 at a time to see which cylinder isnt firing, none of the plugs should be wet.
Getting excess fuel in cylinder could wash oil off the walls , and you dont want fuel to get in the crankcase. That will lead to more problems.

K thanks, the rubber part on the line goin to the pump is shot and leaked that nasty gas everywhere. Any easy way to replace/upgrade it?

The rubber fuel line can be purchased at any good auto parts store. Take old with you to make sure you get same inside diameter.
